Re: 13 reasons why
Not yet. I think I am up to the 9th reason.
Although I haven't finished the entire show, I am getting annoyed with all of the negative views of the show by "mental health professionals"....it doesn't show alternatives, it doesn't give options, it glorifies suicide, blah blah.
I am not in high school so maybe I'm seeing it differently but my take away from this is just don't be an asshole. Think about what you are doing, what rumors you are perpetuating, what stupid "joke" you are participating in...because you don't know how it is really affecting someone or how the trickle down effect will affect someone. I find the show very eye opening and, honestly, it made me feel bad about thinking of some of the things that I did way back when and hoping it didn't have the same ****** effect on someone. I think the show is really well done. (I saw a bit on GMA this morning and it irked me so that's where this little rant is coming from).

13 reasons why
I watched them all. The last episode actually gave me anxiety. I had a hard time watching. I teach hs and it made me think of a lot of my students. I do not like how she blames people for her suicide. Ultimately suiciide is that persons decision alone and what some of those kids did I do not believe warrant a lifetime of guilt tht they willnow endire

I think they all contributed to her decision to end her life. It is personal but given how she was treated you can almost see her POV. I'm not condoning it but you can 't help but feel for her and what she went through.

Same here! I got into an annoying conversation with a friend from HS on FB about it and she never even watched it! I was giving her the perspective from someone that *has* seen it and was enthralled by it. I feel like other than the suicide and the thing that happened in tape 12, it could have been me at that age. I was shy and new and clueless, and some mean things happened to me (that I'm sure the others didn't think was particularly mean), but I was mentally stable enough to not consider suicide.
In the conversation with my friend, I said I thought it would be important to watch with your teens and discuss everything along the way (what could Hannah have done differently, be nice to everyone bc you don't know how a small thing could be a big thing to them, how the guidance counselor didn't handle things well, etc) and my friend was still very against it b/c her kids would never do something like that. Of course I don't think they would either b/c they're homeschooled and by the looks at the photos on FB, their mother is with them 24/7.
One of her friends joined the conversation and her only contribution was to say that if the children has Christ in their hearts, they wouldn't do those things. I was so tempted to respond with the biggest eyeroll emoji I could find.
Ironically, another friend of mine was the only other one that spoke like me and she's a nun/high school teacher/mental health counselor.

13 reasons why
My DH and I have both dealt with suicide in many many ways. I am happy the show is out there. I think we sweep suicide and various mental issues under the rug. People are afraid to talk about it and definitely afraid to talk to our kids about difficult issues.
So I don't care if people don't like the show...if it opens up the conversation for even one person then it was worth it.

You are correct suicide does get swept under the rug and there is such a stigma attached to it. There needs to be more awareness of it and mental illness however from what I have read they way this was done was in poor taste and the ending it disgusting and extremely graphic and has left a few people i know traumatized.
The actual suicide scene was graphic and yes shocking to many. But I do not think the entire show should be judged on that alone. And I know many fast forwarded through that scene.
But I do think you can't judge on that alone and I do think you should give it a chance and just know that you might want to skip that portion. The show has so much more to it than just suicide and IMO is so important in today's society.
I recently had to have a conversation with my 5 year old that I NEVER thought I would have to have and really woke me up to what is going on in the world today.

Do you have any experience with suicide? People that commit suicide do not leave tapes etc... I know enough about it. Yep graphic and no dosent have to be there are several ways people commit suicide. This will be my last post about this b/c I find it very disturbing and upsetting. JMO
sadly the current number of people I know who have taken their own life is currently at 10. From family to friends. to each his own.

Plenty of people leave notes and the tapes was her version of it.
I fully respect your opinion not to watch it but without seeing it I don't think you can comment on the content of it and whether it was done appropriately. jMO and that's from someone that has being dealing with divide for almost 40 years!

Re: 13 reasons why
I'm only up to tape 9 so I can't comment on anything beyond that but it is pretty interesting how its getting more and more upsetting with each tape. It's like each person does something a little more egregious. I am dying to know what Clay did.
I also find it very eye opening to see the aftermath. I feel so sorry for those poor parents and how they are so desperate to find an answer. It's so friggan sad.

I'm on episode 10. I find it very eye opening and intriguing. If my kids were older I would have them watch it and have a real conversation. You always have your critics but it gets people talking about the issue which is good...

Re: 13 reasons why
I want to preface this with I have not been able to watch this yet because at this moment due to life I don't think I can handle it emotionally. Though, while saying that, for me any show that's brings this conversation to the forefront is important. People may or may not like how it is done or how it is shown or her rationales but in the end it has people talking. Too many people are dying from suicide. I hope at least something positive can come from this show.

13 reasons why
13 Reasons Why was a YA novel first, which a lot of people are forgetting in the discussion. So an alternative to watching the show could be reading the book, holding a book club for high school students, opening the discussion that way, etc.

The method of suicide in the book is completely different from the show. The show made bloody, graphic and sensational. I don't know why they changed it.

on beyond 13 they said that they changed the suicide to make an impact to show the viewers that it is not an option they want.
