14-18 month old-- Safety Swim----is it worth it?
Two of my girlfriends are going to be signing their DC's up (they are 14 months/15 months) I've been thinking about it for a long time... but I just can't see how DD could learn to swim at this age? Is it worth it? Or is it just to get them used to the water? We belong to the pool so DD is already used to the water.... I'd like to hear what you all think and what your experiences were/are... tia!!

My sister may respond but I know she does this sort of thing with Mikayla-it is more lifesaving techniques than swimming I believe-like how to get to the side of the pool.

yes your sister will respond to this
Mikayla started swimming lessons at about 9 months old...it is to get them used to being in and under the water. They are taught how to paddle their arms, kick their legs, go underwater and pull themselves out of the pool (after getting themselves to the wall) - great for if god forbid, they ever fall into the water
we will be signing miki up for the fall classes again starting in September
totally worth it

Re: 14-18 month old-- Safety Swim----is it worth it?
My DS is 15 months and we just started mommy and me safe-t-swim 2 weeks ago. My ILs had gotten him a g/f for the individual lessions. But when I talked to the lady there about whether or not he'd even remember these individual lessons next year if we didn't keep coming, she said no. Since I don't have a pool myself, I figured it wasn't useful for me and I wa snot paying $200 to keep coming back for individual lessons. So I used the g/c for the mommy and me class which I like so far. They had him practice kicking on his tummy and then while on his back. We practiced moving our arms int he water. He did some climbing out of the pool and jumping back in and putting his face underwater. Then they put swimmies on and practiced doing those thing by themselves, or with less help. He loved it and laughed the whole time. He wasn't moving much int he beginning, but by the end he was kicking by himself and kind of doggie paddling to duckies they had floating in the water.

I agree for the same reason.

Re: 14-18 month old-- Safety Swim----is it worth it?
I started taking DS at about 13 months. He is a little over 15 months now. Does he know how to swim...no. But--they really work on getting him to be able to save himself god forbid anything happens. They work on kicking his legs and swimming right to the side. He can't do it yet, but i can see he has learned things since starting.
Some people (like my IL's) think I am crazy for spending the $ on this-but I don't. We have an inground pool and I know that I can't teach him the proper life saving things that they do. Do i expect him to know the breast stroke in a few months, no..... but if he can get to the side by himself I will be thrilled.
We started in April and I plan to continue year round with him in the individual lessons.

I think it is worth it. I am starting Andrew now but I wish I did it sooner.

I've also been going with DD (she's 13 months) to the mommy and me and I have noticed a difference. She loves the pool now and they teach them what to do in the water. I've seen some other children about her age who have been doing it a while and you can definitely tell they have had lessons.

Jeremy started swimming at 3 months old. By 18 months he could swim 5' underwater to the stairs. Most of all if he ever fell in he knew not to swim towards the center of the poolbut to turn around and grab the wall.
