16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
Funny the one thing I'm most surprised about is a school sponsored trip to Hawaii.
======================= HONOLULU - A 16-year-old girl who caught a cold during a school trip to New York was kicked off her flight home because she was coughing.
Rachel Collier was removed from the Continental Airlines plane as it was about to leave Newark, N.J., for Honolulu earlier this week. She had fallen asleep after boarding the plane with about three dozen classmates and woke up coughing and gasping for breath as it was about to take off.
"Everyone was looking at me," she said. "I couldn't talk because I lost my voice coughing so much. I was panicking."
The flight attendants gave her water, and a doctor on the flight said she would be OK to make the 10-hour flight. But the captain returned the aircraft to the gate to drop off the girl and one of her teachers.
Rachel said she started crying when the captain told her to leave. She and the teacher finally made it home the next day.
Teacher Maile Kawamura, a chaperone for the spring break trip to New York and Washington, D.C., said she was shocked. The two didn't know what to do or where to stay, she said. They finally found accommodations in New York and bought clothes and toiletries.
Continental said in a statement that Collier was coughing "uncontrollably" on the plane Tuesday and that "the captain felt he was acting in the best interest of the passenger and other passengers on the flight."
Rachel's mother, Stephanie Collier, said Continental has agreed to reimburse her daughter's expenses incurred during the extra day, including the cost of the hotel.
"I felt it was really extreme for a coughing fit," she said. "We've all had coughing fits."

Wow...I'm actually really surprised they did that, especially since the doctor that was on the flight said she'd be alright. At least they're reimbursing them, but they should have at least been nice enough to find them accommodations.

What was the captain worried about? Oh no! Attack by coughing!

I tell you, if the Dr onboard said she is ok, then I don't understand why the captain would go against it!!
What is next, someone kicked off bc of sneezing

Well I can understand the worry, I mean if I was on a plan with someone for an 11 HOUR FLIGHT, I wouldn't want to hear someone hacking there brains out the whole time either, plus who knows if she was really sick.

Re: 16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
I agree 100%
My DH and I both contracted what I think may have been the plague during an international flight home. The guy behind us was coughing like he had tuberculosis and DH and I caught whatever he had.
*HE* may have been okay to fly, but it's not fair that we spent $800 on a flight that ended up costing each of us a week out of work, doctor's expenses, and over a week of our lives feeling like we were teetering on death.

I may be in the minority here, but I agree w/the pilot's decision. God forbid it would have been something more severe, there's not much that can happen while in the air - jeopardizing herself AND the other passengers.

While I understand the pilot's decision, what I don't agree with is that the airline did nothing to accomodate them.

They refunded her airfare as well as gave her the money for everything she spent on hotels, etc.
IMO, that was more than generous.
When I'm sick, I reschedule my flight- and cover my related expenses...never in a million years would I expect a check from the airline.

Since they were departing NY, I can see how they didn't already have a hotel booked. But, they did find one.
I don't know, I just don't have any sympathy for this situation. I think, in general, there seems to be some sense of entitlement. Purchasing an arline ticket doesn't automatically include travel arrangements in the event something happens and you can't be on your flight. I just hate reading these "I got kicked off my flight because of" stories. It's not like someone walks around saying "you stay, you go". People get kicked off because they are either sick and cause a risk to others, or have a screaming child who they can't control. To me, these are all valid reasons for getting kicked off a flight. And, never once have I heard that someone got kicked off a plane AND the airline kept their money.
Everytime I've had to change a flight, I've been charged $200. I don't enjoy paying the fee, but I certainly don't expect the airline to go out of their way for me. I realize that it's my responsibility to take care of myself and my needs.
Coming off the soapbox now...

Re: 16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
yeah but it wasn't her fault that she was coughing uncontrollably.
yeah fine, that wasn't good for the other passengers but the airline made that decision, they at least should accomodate her.

If she was stuck on a plane for 11 hours and became violently ill - the airline would be in trouble for letting her fly, right?
Unless things have changed, its a 45 minute flight from NYC to DC.

When I am sick, I have to cough up (no pun intended ) the fee to change my flight and it is not really my fault I am sick.
I would not want to be stuck on a plane with someone who can not stop coughing and is having a hard time breathing. If they flew like that and she could never catch her breathe is could have turned horribly wrong.

IMO, it's sad that people can't be trusted to not fly when they are sick. I was brought up being told "you can't fly when you're sick", so I have that ingrained in me. It's just not an option to go to an aiport and get on a plane if I am sick.
Hopefully, it won't have to come to the point where people have to have a health screening before boarding a plane, but as someone who contracted something VICIOUS when flying, I am all for keeping passengers healthy. Once you're seated, you have no ability to get away from the sick person, unlike being out in public, or even being on a train or subway. When you're on a plane and the person near you is hacking up a lung, you're totally scr*wed.
