Re: 16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
The fact that she was having trouble breathing I think justifies the Captain, regardless of what the Dr says. let's face it even though he is a doctor he could not have performed a full exam or diagnostic tests to confirm that the 11 hour flight would not have been of harm to her or the other passengers.
And I do agree that the airline should have tried to help her find a hotel & transport back to the airport the following day.

yeah but it wasn't her fault that she was coughing uncontrollably.
yeah fine, that wasn't good for the other passengers but the airline made that decision, they at least should accomodate her.
What else should they have done?
find her a hotel.

Re: 16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
I totally agree with the captain. She couldn't talk when this was going on. I think it's a lot harder than we may think to get an airplane from 35K feet down in an emergency. The same reason why pilots have the authority to not allow pregnant women on board. There's so much involved for emergency landings - making sure you don't hit other planes that are supposed to be in that airspace, clearing run ways, making a myraid of other planes circle and wait to land this plane.

I agree with the captain and would love to see them monitor people that fly on planes. Think about the air you breathe when you are on a plane. It is just recirculated so you are breathing everyone elses germs.
Think about this in the reverse- if the pilot did take off and the girl got worse and went into a respiratory arrest, that pilot would lose his job in a hearbeat and the media would be all over it in a much worse way. I can see if it was just a short flight, but this was going to be a VERY long flight. Totally justified IMO.

Re: 16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
Ridiculous.
A Dr. said she was ok to make the flight.
I assume (though it doesn't clearly say) that she stopped coughing and was able to breathe normally again at some point.
What's next - kicking someone off for having BO?
Since when does buying a plane ticket guarantee you that there will no disruptions in your comfort whatsoever?

Re: 16 year old kicked off flight for coughing.
It's pretty obvious the whole story isn't printed. Believe me, no Captain is going to risk having to deal with *the Company* or the chief pilot by making silly decisions like pulling someone because they coughed or sneezed.
The article mentioned she was gasping for air- that goes beyond a small coughing fit. With changes in air pressure and humidity- if she had a truly compromised respiratory system, things could go downhill very quickly at 35,000 feet. A doctor doing a quick assessment with the equipment airplanes usually have (stethoscpoe and blood pressure cuff) couldn't possibly determing that.
I just love how the media puts such a spin on things. The latest trend is to trash the airline industry and what better way to get the public all up in arms than to report how some poor girl was banned from flying because she "coughed".

What's next?
Sneezing? Hiccups?
A full physical before boarding a plane?
Just as long as its not an internal

Not often enough. I was flying home from somewhere...I think Dominican Republic, and the woman in front of me was wearing a sleeveless shirt. She kept lifting her arm and we would DIE every time she did. We told the flight attendant about it and asked him to just ask her to keep her arm down. He wouldn't do it, so we suffered the entire flight. He offered to move our seats, but there was only one seat open on the plane so only one of us could move. I couldnt let DH suffer like that, although he offered, so we declined the move. We just breathed through our shirts for the remainder of the flight.
