17-18 month old vocabulary
What is your 17-18 months old saying?
How clear do they speak, do you find ttat you understand what they are saying but other people ( not you or DH ) don't know what they are saying?
Do they speak in 2 word or 3 word sentences?
TIA

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
Geez...I don't know. DD is 17 mos. and has tons of words--I honestly couldn't even count them. I think most people would be understand most of what she says.
She's not necessarily speaking in sentences at all, but she will say, "Seat- Daddy" if she's sitting in my DH's place at the table or similar phrases to that. Or she says "Thank you" which is probably more like one word to her at this point.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
Ayla is 17 months and she speaks a handful of words. It's not an abundance amount of words but a decent handful. Oh I lied she says Read book (that's 2)
but everything else are single words.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
josh is a late talker and has articulation issues b/c of low oral muscle tone so...
he only has 30-40 single words and most sound the same ex. upa= up and open, baba=baby, bailey (our dog), bubbles. also he may only get the initial sound right in a word b/c he has only a few vowel sounds. he knows about 10 signs and understands everything though so i know he will catch up eventually.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
Gianna says quite a bunch and speak in 3/4 word sentences. Right now her knew one is, I dont want it/that.
The other day, DH said F**kin and she repeated "F**k" right after him. Lovely huh?
Most part she repeats all, knows her body parts, says them all. Most comes our clearly...some dosent. Most are single words or phrases that belong together. Thank you, Bless you.

Christopher did that last night too
He has a lot of words, and does small sentences. He will be 18 months on Sunday.

I am really, really surprised at all the young babies speaking two or three word sentences.
Steven is 23 months and doesn't say much. Maybe a handfull of words. He says lots of things that nobody understands. He mostly grunts and points. And, most of what he does say are not actual words, but imitations of what we just said to him or part words (ex: ou for outside).

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
i'm a speech therapist.. .at that age, they are usually just starting to use a lot of single words. they usually start with words that are important or exciting to them. like for a child who has a dog in their house, and likes the dog, one of their first words might be either "dog" or some approximation of the dog's name. or it might be an approximation for the name of their favorite toy, or just something that really interests them. THEN, once they realize the "power" and fun of using words and how excited it makes mommy and daddy, then they start becoming little parrots and repeating all kinds of words! i wouldn't expect perfect articulation at that age, if it sounds close to the "real" name for the thing they are referring to, and they use it consistently to refer to the same thing, then i would consider it a word. usually the short 3 or 4 word sentences don't start until closer to 2 years old.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
Lucas is a few days short of 17 months - his words:
Mama/Mommy Dada/Daddy Uh Oh Oh No Up Hi Hello Bye-Bye Wow Wee Airplane Car Moon Baby Ball Boat Elmo (Emoo) Cracker Cookie Yummy (Ummy) That (Dat) Turtle (Tutrel) Bubble Happy Birthday (sings it - Appy Birday) Thank You (dan u) Please (peasss) No No
Woof-Woof = Dog Quack-Quack = Duck Roar (he says roaw) = Lion Choo-Choo = Train
No sentences what-so-ever. He says one word at a time - no combos.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
I want to preface this by saying that G is around many older children on a regular basis & has a mamma with a big mouth
That being said he has a very large vocabulary for his age, and is making sentences on a regular basis (usually one of a few that he has been saying for a few weeks). The latest are: -What is that/this? - What a mess! - want milk please - oh wow (usually followed by what caught his attention) - Put on Elmo please (although Elmo comes out Elno....) - ready for school - Where's the baby? (we ask him this since I started showing) - That is dirty (my fault for trying to keep the dog toys out of his mouth )
These are way more intelligible to me and to his teacher than to anyone else. Sometimes DH can understand and sometimes not. He also speaks very quickly (also like his mamma )
He still says a lot of single words, and sometimes has difficulty with words that are "simple" (like he JUST started saying "up" and "more" and cannot say thank you but rather grunts.)

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
My DD is a big talker for her age but I know its not the norm. She probably had about 30 words at 18 months and used 2 word sentences at the time. People don't always believe me until she opens her mouth. I really think girls are more verbal than boys, even at that early age.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
Maddie is 16 months and has many words and has said a few sentences including:
waffle cracker quack-quack duck more milk Jo Jo (our dog Joey) hi bye da da ma ma dirty Elmo something that sounds like "bad boy" (what I say to the dog) ball car uh-oh wow ohhh Encyclopedia (lol...jut kidding on that one)
what's that? who's that?
she mimics us a lot....I, as her mother, can tell what she's trying to say, but I'm not sure if anyone else can, besides her Dad.

I'm right there with you on this, Steph..it always shocks me to see what other kids are saying on here, since Nikolas was a very late talker. Even now at 2 he doesn't say THAT much .. though he tries very hard and has consistently improved (hasn't reverted or 'lost' speech)
He has many words (though I am not one who counts how many ) but no sentences at all really.. unless it's things like "mommy up" or "what's that" ...this sort of thing. And he does imitate a lot. But I will say that still a LOT of what he 'says' is unintelligible even to me, his Mom
He understands EVERYTHING though.. follows directions perfectly... so I'm not all that concerned just yet. In a month or so (per my ped's advice) we will call EI if we haven't seen improvement or the 'explosion' of speech. I figure it cannot hurt

Ok, that was really funny!!
ETA: G has a big vocab and I contribute a lot of it to daycare. All kids are older and talk to her and expect a response and my niece too, a lot learned from her.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
He says 2-3 word combinations - Go dis way, want dat, dats not nice, I got it, hi daddy, want mama, where da ball? Here is is, Here da ball, get me, what dat... he also counts to 3...
He also tries to say avocado - it sounds like "Ah-wa-wo" its his favorite food.... he says almost all his favorite foods - bopple for apple, dee dee for strawberries, teese for cheese. He knows his animals and their sounds....
He jibber jabbers all day and repeats everything, but he is really exploding with his language lately...

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
DD is almost 16 months and says a ton of words, I would really say she knows 25+ words, plus animal sounds, etc. Learns at least 1 new word a day. She's definitely a big talker...hmm...wonder where that comes from Several 2 word phrases, lots of single words, all words are pretty clear.
But as I like to point out, most kids are "great" in certain areas and "not as great" in other areas. DD was a quick walker and has a big vocab, but she's still a tough eater...so I hate comparing to other kids.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
DD is 17 months old & says about 4 words. She understands everything we say & she communicates her need with "grunts" and by physically taking us to what she wants - ie. the drawer with the cups for a drink or a cracker, etc. She is very physical, though, and I tend to think she'll be a late talker because her focus is on other things.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
You know I love you, Flee
IMO, from people that I know in REAL life...this is more normal than 18 month olds who say 2 or 3 word strings. I never met one of those 18 month olds. Though, I guess there are exceptions.
To ME, and I could be totally wrong because I am definately NOT a professional, but "want that" is not a 2 word string. Or 'did it." Because to Steven, it's ONE word. wandat. didit. He would not say 'want milk' or 'did you' not yet, anyway. So, I don't consider that a two word sentence for him. Because for him, it's one word. If he said something like 'cat down' for the cat to get down, THAT to me is two words.

Re: 17-18 month old vocabulary
Luca had more words than I can count at that point. By 18 months he was starting to put 2-3 words together. As for clarity, people always commented on how clearly he speaks. Of course there were/are times when noone knows what he's saying. But on the whole, you can understand a good 85% of what he's saying. Now at 2 he speaks fairly full senteces. "mommy, I got to gym class." "no mommy, I don't like that."

I don't think that's her implication. I think she's just saying that not ALL kids speak so early.
