1st grade anxiety
I am so anxious about Damien going into first grade and riding on a bus with kids up till 5th grade. Last school year he went to a kindergarten center so it was only kids his own age. I feel like 1st and 5th are worlds apart and am worried about him being with bigger kids. I don't want him to be afraid. I wish my schools did 1st thru 3rd and then 4th thru 6th at different schools.

Re: 1st grade anxiety
I have been in many schools and in all of them the 1st and 5th graders seem to be kept far apart in different wings, differnt lunch times. He will be with1st graders all of the time and will in all likelihood rarely see a 5th grader.
Good luck! Hope he loves 1st grade

I am more worried about him riding on the bus with the older kids. They only had the bus driver last year so I hope they have a matron or something with all the different age groups!

I have no advice because I know when the time comes I'll be freaking out.
Just wanted to give you - I'm sure he'll be fine and the older kids probably don't even notice the little ones!

I can't believe your son is going into 1st grade! This dates me but I remember on LIW when you first found out you were pregnant with him...wow..have I been on LIW / LIF that long..
Re: the bus - I'm sure the older kids will most likely ignore the little ones and the little ones will stick together..plus don't they have bus monitors etc...

Re: 1st grade anxiety
The school I work in is K-5 and the bus drivers keep the kindergartners in the first few seats (the bigger kids always race to the back). If they don't do that for the younger kids on your sons bus, you can always ask the bus driver to allow your son to sit near the front until he is comfortable on the bus. I am sure they have some sort of system set up to help the little ones acclimate to the change. Good luck and remember this will probably be a lot harder on you than on your son!

i dont know if they do this in every school, but in my DD's school they even had the youngest kids on the bus sit up front.. older kids in the back. maybe if you call the school and ask how they handle this kind of situation it will make you feel better. i am sure you are not alone in feeling this way. i know i did too before i found out about their bus policy.

Re: 1st grade anxiety
I know when the time comes for my son to attend 1st grade, I will have the same anxiety! I am sending you many hugs. From what I remember, the younger kids sit up front and the older kids sit in the back.

Re: 1st grade anxiety
Just to give you some peace, in my school, the fifth graders and even older kids, like to watch out for the little ones on the bus. They really make sure they know where to go and are ok. He's going to be great! I am sure you're not going to feel at ease until he does it for a little while, but I'm rooting for him!

same here! they love the little guys and really look out for them. the only real "trouble" happens with kids in the older grades among themselves, not older picking on younger.
they all think how "cute" the little ones are and love showing them where to go because they're the big men and women on campus now

Re: 1st grade anxiety
No help, since I'm freaking in the same boat! A is off to K in 2 weeks and he's taking a bus for the first time. I am not even sure who will be on the bus, since his school is K-8th grade!!
