2% milk for a 1 year old? PLEASE HELP

I love my pediatrician but from day 1 he has been on me about DS's weight.

DS gained 9 lbs from April to August. He is 1 - 32 inches and 30 lbs. He doesn't look "fat"

He says 9lbs is too much to gain in that amount of time.

Instead of putting him on whole milk, he wants me to put him on 2% or even 1% milk.

This worries me - I thought babies needed the fat from milk to grow. He says he won't need it because he can get it from his food.

Please tell me someone has experience with this. I'm very reluctant to follow this advice because I've never heard anyone else do it with their DC.

I really dont like that answer either. Honestly, I love our pediatricians and there are tons of them there. Its Midsuffolk pediatrics in happaugue. NEVER ...did they discuss Gillians weight being a factor or changing milk etc...
She started out at 90% then 75% then 40%, 50% and 40%...
It fluctuates...thats life. Taking away necessary nutrients...thats just BS...
Honestly...you are looking at about 2 pounds a month weight gain...doesnt sound EXTREME to me like they are making it out to be.

Either way I dont see it being a big deal...Do what makes you feel comfortable...

2% milk is 2% milk fat...whole milk is 4%..not really that much of a difference..and he'll be getting the fat from other foods. Fat is needed for brain growth...

I agree - The thing is - he also went from 27 inches to almost 32 inches and I figured at 3 lbs a month - that would make sense....

I might try mixing a little whole milk and a little 2% for a while and see what happens....

DS has been on 1% for quite some time now b/c he had constipation issues. I don't see a problem with it.

How much is his current weight?
He is already taller then my dd who is 20 months. He sounds like his height could be off the charts as well so I wouldnt think gaining 2 pounds a month would be bad.

Re: 2% milk for a 1 year old? PLEASE HELP

I'm not sure if you remember, I had to look back at my old FM and with the name switch and all you confused the heck out of me, but you and I had a conversation about our "big" babies back in October.

DS was 27 lbs and 32 inches at his 1 year appt. He was 25lbs and 29 inches at the 9 month appt.

I've been concerned from day 1 about his weight because of the weight issues that both DH and I face. While I never deprive my son of anything there are definately things that I give him (and don't give him) to ensure that he does not succumb to the genes he has inherited, as well as more importantly teach him how to eat healthy from the beginning.

So imagine my surprise at his 1 year appt. when his ped sprung this on me too with the reduced fat milk. i was skeptical too. He explained to me about how they're finding that babies like DS (over 95% percentile) have enough stored fat that they will not be negatively effected by the 2% drop in fat to go down to 2% milk. He also explained that they're finding now that the risks associated with childhood (and adulthood) obesity do not justify giving him full fat milk.

I just want to mention, my ped had NEVER said anything to me about DS's weight or family history as a cause for concern per se so I didn't feel like he was forcing this upon me. He just knows how much of a paramount concern it is for me so he put it out there as what he recommends and then it is up to me to decide. He did show me how DS plots out and he did grow consistantly over the year and not in any large spurt so he said that also causes him not to have too much of a concern with his size now. Plus at the time my son still wasn't crawling so not considered an active toddler.

So after doing research and talking to DH about it we decided to do 2%, reduce to 1% at 18 months and skim at 2 years old. I found this article that talks about it and how the AAP actually is supporting it which made me feel better (link below)

It is a very personal decision. It does go against anything we've known and read. However, i now feel comfortable that we are doing the right thing for us.

If you are hesitant about it than do whole. He can't force you. maybe see how much he gains in the next 3 months and then reconsider how you feel. As they get more active they should shed some weight off. But your son is very tall so of course he is going to weigh more. I constantly get looks and comments from people on his size. I'm very sensitive too it, I probably take it more personal than I should.

Just do what you feel is the right thing!!!

Re: 2% milk for a 1 year old? PLEASE HELP

Im not a Dr. but 9 lbs sounds like a lot. Thats almost 1/2 my 14 month olds entire body weight.

Im an advocate of research, so I think your wise to ask these questions. Do some research on your own and make your own decision.

i dont think they would tell you anything bad, they know what they are doing, bUT you do need to be 100% comfortable since its your child.

Good luck!

I do remember!!!!!
Ibelle, thank you a million times for this post! You've made me feel a million times better.

I feel the same - my DS is big and I take it personally when people comment on it. Sometimes I feel like a bad parent but I'm not feeding him "bad things". the Dr. said the 9lb weight gain could be because I was giving him too much formula (24oz instead of 16oz daily) but at almost 32 inches, and with an almost 5 inch growth spurt, he was bound to gain a lot.

The Dr. did the same thing with us - he showed us the graph that showed how his weight was spiking. There is no family history of obesity in our family (although I still have baby weight to lose) so I'm sure that his motivation for limiting his intake to 2% had to do with DS's weight gain. It makes me feel so much more comfortable that you had a similar experience!

Ladies, you have made me feel so much better about this. THANK YOU!

Ladies

Re: 2% milk for a 1 year old? PLEASE HELP

A Dr will worry about weight if it is increasing and not consistent.

We have the opposite issue.

DS is small and underweight and always has been.

When I asked the Dr. about it, he said he has always consistently been in the 10th percentile and always underweight so they attribute it to his etabolism.

She did say they would worry more if he was overweight, so I guess thats where your Dr. Is coming from.

So if your son ( total example here) went from say the 50% percentile in weight to now like 90%....They will worry and feel its caused and not just genetic.

BUT, I wouldnt take it personal at all Chat Icon Chat Icon

They are just worrying for your son, as you would want them to. I dont think anyone would think your doing anything wrong, so try not to ( although hard Im sure) take it to heart. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you - that totally makes sense to me.

Believe me, I'm glad they are worried. I don't want my son to be part of the obesity epidemic. I just don't want his overall development to suffer so that he can be "thin", KWIM?

I feel really confident after talking to you ladies and doing some research that the 2% milk will still give him what he needs to grow and develop fully. Thank you so much for being patient with a neurotic mom! Chat Icon

I personally would stick with whole milk until 2 then switch. Its important for their brain development. YOu can watch weight gain by choosing lowfat cheese and yogart and making other lowfat healthy choiceschoices. Fact is, many big babies thin out during their second yr of life without any true intervention, as long as they are provided with healthy choices. I would be concerned with a doc so paranoid about weight, especially if I had a girl. They don't need any unnecessary pressure to stay thin. Eating healthy is wise. Only whole grain carbs and fruits and vegies should be enough to keep your dc where you want them to be weight wise.

I would switch drs, simply to protect my dd's selfesteem. For my ds I might not worry as much.
