2 Teachers and children
DH and I are both teachers (high school English and Social Studies respectively). We are thinking about TTC but are worried that our jobs (grading and lesson planning)are going to get in the way of raising our child...we were thinking of other job options for one of us because we cannot think of a couple who are both teachers, under 35 and have kids....I guess I'm asking if there is anyone here that is in a similar situation or knows anyone in a similar situation and what your experience has been or any advice...TIA

Re: 2 Teachers and children
We are in a similiar situation. Though DH is not a teacher, I work REALLY hard and, if there's one thing that I am when it comes to teaching, it's a perfectionist. I spend WAYYYY too much time in my classroom after-hours, and way too much time planning lessons at home.
In all honesty, I think having children changes your perspective a bit. It forces you to put your own children before the children in your classroom. If I am still teaching when that first baby comes along, it's my plan to still be a stellar teacher, but to definitely cut back on the amount of work that I'm taking home.

I am not in that situation, but have several friends who are. It has worked out really nicely for them. I think you can manage it. Like with any situation, you give it your best.

Re: 2 Teachers and children
One of my dear friends is a speech/ special ed teacher and her husband is a high school English teacher, they have 2 boys. In fact I in my district there are many teachers married to other teachers in the district. Definitely do able and the summers and vacations make it the best.

Re: 2 Teachers and children
Both DH and I are teachers and we have 3 kids. (4 1/2, 2 1/2 and 11 months) He teaches HS English and I teach 2nd grade but an hoping to get back up to 6th grade. Yes times can be a little crazy with planning/grading etc. We try and do as much as we can during our prep time. Ohter times we switch off when we get home from school. Every once in awhile if one of us gets a little behind right after school I'll watch the kids and he goes upstairs to do some work for a 1 to 2 hours and vice versa. MOst night s after the kids are in bed we'll just sit in front of the tv and grade.
I understand your concern but as long as you get a routine down it all works out. You'll also have sometimes on weekends. Some days I'lll just go to my parents house with the kids and he'll work or he'll take the kids out for me. It's nice sometimes that they have their own toime with each of us.
We love that we have vacations together and we're off at the same time. It really isn't as bad as it seems. If you have any other questions please feel free to Fm me.
ETA: I am 36 and DH is 42. We've been with our current district for 9 years.

Re: 2 Teachers and children
I know a ton of couples who are both teachers. They work it out just fine. One does lesson planning, the other takes care of the kids for a bit and they switch. You will also find you will try to get a lot of done on your prep periods during the day as well as taking longer to grade things. From what I have heard, priorities shift a little but it works out. Re: 2 Teachers and children
how long have you been teaching for? at some point i would think that your work load should lesson considering you prob often repeat many of the same lessons each year.

Re: 2 Teachers and children
We are both finishing up our third year and were both given brand new subjects to teach this year as well as new responsibilities at work...I already have things nearly the way I want things with one of the subjects I teach and the other one is getting there....I think our concerns with having kids and being teachers has to do with us being so overwhelmed this year...we are also concerned over money .. but I think that is a concern all or most parents have...thanks so much for your responses!!! You are all making me feel a bit more relieved...I know that my priorities are going to definitely shift once kids enter the picture
