2 year old weight check...EDITED: Added pics...
My dd has always been on the bigger side... She is always up over 75th percentile for weight.. Today we had her 2 year check up... She is 34 inches and 33 lbs... Doctor talked a lot about food choices but believes she is eating too much volume... She gained 4 lbs in 4 months!
So.. Now I feel so guilty.., I don't know what to do... How do you cut down on food when your child asks for more? It breaks my heart to do this at 2 years old... :( but I don't want her to have to struggle with weight! Any suggestions? I have been crying y eyes out since we got home feeling so guilty... Like I passed on my heavy genes...

Re: 2 year old weight check...
What does she eat in a typical day?
Can you replace some of her snacks with raw veggies such as baby carrots or strips of bell pepper for snacks etc? These are lower in call, higher in fiber and filling and yuumy!
It's hard. We are on the other end of the specturm, can't get her to gain enough. Either way any type of weight struggle is hard!

Re: 2 year old weight check...
DD was 31lbs at her 2 year check up and she eats NOTHING.
She is not "big" to me at all and the drs said she is doing perfect and has remained on her growth curve since birth!

Re: 2 year old weight check...
Can she drink more water or cut back on other things like milk and/juice? Or sub in more fruits/veggies and proteins instead of carbs? One of my concerns is similar, passing on my eating habits to DD but at the same time I don't want to obsess about it and have it backfire (which was me growing up ). I feel your pain One really positive thing is that you are being proactive about it! Props to you for that!

Re: 2 year old weight check...
She is a carb eater... She snacks only a bit, not a really big eater either! She usually eats an oatmeal for breakfast, a bigger lunch... And hardly eats dinner.. Snake are goldfish, cheese, and fruit. She dies drink a lot of juice, which we are going to cut out.. And she drinks like 1 cup of milk a day... This last month people have been giving her lots of sweets... So we have to jus put our foot down and not let that happen. Thanks for the advice!

AJ was 25.4 lbs 33 1/2 inches tall
eats whatever she can fit into her mouth and she was on the 'heavy side' because she's short. LOL

Re: 2 year old weight check...
I am the mom of 2 bigger girls. My Dr. does not take issue with their size because their height and weight are on the same curve. They are "solid" kids. They are the type of kids that will eat whatever you put in front of them. They turn their noses at almost nothing. It is just about portion control. If we have dinner and they want seconds they can have seconds of whatever veggie(not starch veggies) we had to fill them up more or I make salad. The LO gets cucumbers and tomatos. Good filler. They get one snack a day and a piece of fruit. Dessert is no more then 3 times a week and may also be a fruit. They only drink water and seltzer. Peyton drinks one sippy of milk(2%) a day. They are fine! Just be aware. I worry too. For us, people make comments to me and them all the time because I am 5ft 2 1/2in. and 110lbs. People do not think before they speak. My 10 year old really feels it I know that they eat healthy and do not over eat. They are genetically more like DH's family.
BTW: Whe the LO who doesn't understand, asks for more, it is easy to distract them with a game, going outside or any fun activity.
ETA: I do not recall her 2 yr check up but at 2 1/2 Peyton was 40lbs and 40 inches a perfect cube

Re: 2 year old weight check...
I don't think that is "big." I see that she gained a lot but maybe she is going through a growth spurt...I don't know I don't buy into any of this crap. Keep offering her healthy snack intoduce more protein and fresh veggies.

Re: 2 year old weight check...
DS at 2yo was 40lbs!
He was a monster. Not really too chubby, just big all around. He was tall and heavy (made of bricks I suspect) Since birth he was always in the 97%+ for both height and weight...
I can't really help you with the diet issues though because my ped never made any issue of it.
At 1yo DS was 30lbs, at 2yo he was 40lbs but then at 3y2m he was 43lbs...

ITA with this. DD is about the same size as your DD at almost 2 1/2. Our Dr. sees no problem with it. I think as long as you are giving her a good variety of healthy foods, you are fine!

Re: 2 year old weight check...
My dd was always on the higher side since she was in utero, for weight. 90th %
At 2 years she was 33 3/4 and 31 lbs. 90th% for weight and 50% for height, since birth.
Ped was not concerned, I was not told to cut back b/c she has always been in the 90th and it didn't seem like a concern.
I see her slimming down even more now that she is growing more and more active. I am not concerned and was not made to be by my ped either.
Your DD doesn't sound too heavy to me.

Re: 2 year old weight check...
DD was 36" and 30 lbs. Off the charts for height and about 80% for weight. She was in the 90% for both at birth. She eats a TON but she's always moving. We just make sure that she is eating good stuff - lots of fruit and veggies, lean meats, whole grain bread and pasta, etc. She does get occasional treats (last night she had a kid cup of ice cream at a restaurant) but we don't have it in the house. She doesn't drink juice and she drinks 1% or skim milk. She's bigger than any other 2 yo in her class. It used to worry me but now I just go with it. Don't beat yourself up

Re: 2 year old weight check...
What milk is she drinking? 1%, 2, whole? Could you try skim?
Lots of fruits!!! My DCs fill up on grapes, strawberries, pinapple, apples, oranges galore!
THe "worst" snack they have are animal crackers and goldfish! Then I don't feel as bad if they have more than 1 serving!
Hopefully these things would fill her up faster than other stuff! Not that I am saying your DD does...I just speak from looking at my DH's nephews' diets and it amazes me with them! rolleyes:
I am sure she will have a growth spurt soon and it will all plateau!
Good luck!:

Re: 2 year old weight check...
DD was 35 and 36inches at her 2 year check up ...always has been off the charts..she's built just like I was when I was her age...and now I'm a "normal" adult...Dr did give me some advice. I give her very very healthy food and she does like her snacks but we're limiting her snacks or replacing them wtih fruits or veggies which has been a battle but slowly working! She's also ultra active but over the winter not so much so I attribute some of the weight gain in the winter months to that

Re: 2 year old weight check...
Thanks everyone...
She is drinking 1% milk, has been since her 1 year checkup.... she eats a lot of carbs, not a lot of veggies, because its a struggle and when its dinner time, I just dont feel like fighting... she has had 4 birthday celebrations this month, which im sure allowed her to consume too much cake... and ice cream.. we do not give her that at home, and have to tell a few people to stop bringing cupcakes everytime they see her... she has always eaten a lot of fruit, I think its just more of an issue that I have with weight myself and I just do not want her to have it... so I always feel like its my fault/I am to blame... so I want to make sure I do whats best for her and do it now... oh and I agree, this winter has cut down on her activity.. we need to get out more..
she has always been higher in weight than in her height curve, and I dont think the drs like that..
here she is... I think she is perfect...

Re: 2 year old weight check...EDITED: Added pics...
When I had DS' 2 year visit 2 1/2 months ago, I had the same concerns and wrote this post
my weight post
I have calmed down, although I plan to take DS at the end of the month to check again. (This is on my own. The ped didn't say we should come back.)
ETA: she is adorable!

shoe looks very healthy and not big at all. It's all in perspective and height and weight in proportion need to be evaluated together not individually.
