Interesting.
Doesn't everyone typically paint when they move in to personalize the space? I wouldn't not buy a great space just because the living room had red walls and I was a neutral kinda girl...

A lot of people have a hard time seeing past things like that. They have a hard time seeing themselves in the home if the decor is very bold and not their taste.

Re: 20 Things That Can Alter the Value of Your Home
Its interesting, but IMO is talking about new construction houses. Things like master bedroom suites with huge bathrooms and his and her walk in closets, AT least a two car garage etc, just don't exist in houses that were build 30,40, 50 years ago. And there usually is not room to add these things either.

so true... Overall, DH and I can look past that superficial stuff, but I realized that after first seeing the home we bid on, we left with the impression that it was much smaller than it actually is... becuase the tennant is mid-move, and boxes and clutter are EVERYWHERE... I actually missed the wood-burning stove in the living room... it was burried
so yeah, I realized yesterday that even those who can often look past the red and see the potential, still subconciously 'see red' and are turned off

Re: 20 Things That Can Alter the Value of Your Home
It is interesting, and I would agree with each of the things listed, though I think this article is very out of step with what is actually out there for people who are not buying in new developments.
Multi-jet showers? Please! I was just happy to see the bathrooms in our house were in reasonably good condition after seeing many that were a mess. The wallpaper in one is really ugly, but we figured that's easy to replace in time. And these lounging areas in the master suite? Never saw that in a single house we looked at, including some that were slightly out of our price range.

Re: 20 Things That Can Alter the Value of Your Home
well, this article is geared towards the national market where a lot of homes are pretty new, not the northeast, where old buildings abound, and you have to compromise on room size and features....
from the 3 village perspective, I'd like to see how many victorians have jetted showers and 3 car garages
In all fairness, they have a 'historical home' clause, saying these expectations don't apply to old houses, in their article
