2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
Ok so I have two friends that delivered for the second time in the last couple of weeks and both happened so fast they didn't have time for an epidural.
Now that's making me anxious. I need it!!! I'm all for a quick labor and delivery, but I want the drugs! The thought of doing it without an epidural makes me so anxious
What was your experience for your 2nd dc?!

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
with my second, i started getting contractions at 4am...got to the hospital at 5:30am and was 7.5 cm upon arrival. DH asked immediately for me to get an epidural to which they told me there is a shift change. DH argued and got them to do it before the shift change bc i dont know if i would have been able to if we waited.
That being said...the epidural experience this time around was awful...i passed out after getting it and it didnt work.
my advice would be not to wait...go to the hospital sooner rather than later and be sure to ask for one right away...even if you arent very far along if they are having you stay, get it just to be safe.

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
I didn't have time for an epidural my 3rd time around. I was scared to death and on the verge of tears and hysterics when they told me I didn't have time... To be totally honest it was the best delivery of the three and fastest/easiest recovery. My previous labors were very long and I needed them... when the labor is so quick that you don't have time for one - it really isn't necessary. Don't stress too much. I've heard its MUCH more common the third time around then the second. I don't know anyone who didn't have time with their 2nd DC.

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
My 1st was an induction that led to a csection. I got an epi at 4cm.
My 2nd my water broke at home at 9pm. I felt fine. Got to the hospital at 1am. 130am the pain started to hurt terrible! I dilated sooo fast and at 330am i was 9cm no epidural but received one at that point. I delivered my son at 341am. I guess I could have done it without one but I was afraid because as it was I was in so much pain. Dont stress - you will deal with whatever you are presented with. I never thought I would be 9cm with no epidural.

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
For my 2nd, I had the epidural (same as my 1st). I was 3cm dilated when active labor began. I tried to hold off on the epidural, but DS was bearing down and I begged for the epidural after an hour of back labor. I got it when I was just around 5/6cm and within 2-3 hours, he was out. There was a slight delay b/c the power went out at hospital and they had to get the computer in my room back up and running before they would let me start to actively push. Luckily, the machine for the epidural was on the back-up generator, so I never lost those meds!

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
This was pretty much me!
For my first kid, I was overdue, had an induction that took 24 hours total. I had the epi from 1cm dilated (I still felt stuff here and there so it didn't completely take the pain away.)
For my 2nd, I was again overdue.... I went to work the day of, went out to eat, and walked around a bit. That night, at about 10:30pm I started feeling some pain that I felt weren't braxton hicks but because I didn't really feel much other early labor with my first other than cramping, I didn't know for sure. I wanted the epi, so we decided to head to the hospital. (My contractions were all over the place.)
I got to the L&D room at about Midnight, where I was 6 CM, and I wanted the EPI so they were gonna give it to me, but first they had to run a certain amount of fluid through me by IV. They weren't hurrying or anything with the IV and stuff, and they were still thinking I still had a while to go since my contractions were between 4-8 min apart.
Well, then in no time, I had the urge to push, and literally, they were like don't you'll rip your cervix. Well my doctor got there and said it was ok, and then said I was about 10 cm.
Long story short, my dd was born at 1:24 am, less than an hour and a half after getting to the room... with no epi, because there was no time.
I was screaming that I was going to die, but honestly, looking back, it was much less a recovery from that than with the epi. The second she was out--no pain.
Now having had an epi, and no epi... not sure what I will do this time!!! If I knew that labor was gonna be less than 2 hours total, I'd do no epi again. But the thing is... you just don't know!!!

Thank you for posting this. I live in terror thinking about having to deliver without an epidural. I was very close to not being able to have it with DS but ultimately I got it. While I was waiting, I really thought I might die. I was climbing the walls. This gives me some sort of hope that in the event I miss it, it will be fast.

2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
I got one with DD2. I was induced with DD1 so I don't know how long my labor would have been the first time around. It was quick with DD2, but still had time for an epi.

i had the same experience as your friends. dd1 came in 4 hours but i did have the epidural. dd2 came 90 minutes from the time my water broke so no time for an epidural. did u have a quick labor with your first??

I was induced. Labored for about 14 hours, including just under an hour of pushing.

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
2nd was 4 hours from start to finish. Got to hospital at 8am and he was born at 9:01am. I made a point to tell them asap i wanted an epidural. I got one at 8 cm's, they broke my water and started pushing a few minutes later.
3rd- got to hospital at 10pm and he wasn't born until 1am. Got epidural at 8 cm's shortly after i got there but the doctor wouldn't break my epidural yet since they were short staffed and were waiting on 1 other doctor to come in.

2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
With DS (baby #2), my contractions started at 4am. I didn't deliver him until 9pm, with the help of a little pitocin. Shorter delivery time from start of contractions until delivery than with my DD, but by no means too fast for epidural.

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
I was induced with cervadil with my first DC and went into very active labor very quickly, ultimately no time for an epidural. I had heard that this could happen but didn't expect to be one of them.
Now I'm preggo with DC2 and although I'm terrified I'll end up going without again, I know that I survived in the end. And I'll be sure to speak up about my experience the first time early and often!

Took me forever both deliveries. Induced twice and took forever. Plenty of time for an epi!

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
I'm due with my second any day now and I have been terrified thinking of this. I also heard a few stories of second time births being so quick there is now time for an epi. My first was an induction that's lasted about 12 hours and the gave me the epi as soon as I asked. Once I get to the hospital I am Begging them for it!!

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
I too didn't think of this. I was induced with DD so I also had plenty of time for an epidural. Two in fact because the first wasn't properly done! My dr did tell me that subsequent births tend to be quicker so definitely a possibility. I will be sure to ask for the epi right away!!

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
I had plenty of time... first labor was 19 hours start to finish (induction), second labor I was at the hospital for 6 hours before he was born so there was still lots of time.

Water broke at home. Went to hospital and labor didn't kick in. Ended up getting pitocin. Got Epi not long after starting pitocin.

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
First labor was 6 hours no time for epi. Second was 4 hours and was 7cm after just 1 hour of labor and baby was so low I couldn't pee but I begged for an epi and got one. It unfortunately slowed down my labor but made it bearable. When you go in, ask for epi asap!

Re: 2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
My 2nd labor was half the time of my first. I told them as soon as I got there that I wanted an epidural. It was about 2 hours from my first contraction and I was 5cm. By the time I had the fluids and the anesthesiologist got to me, I was truthfully close to 10 cm. Once he left the room and my husband came back, I told him to get the nurse and I started to push. If you want it, tell them as soon as you get there. And my 3rd labor was longer than my first two, so you never know!

2nd dc delivery..too fast for an epidural?!
Get the epi right when you get there! With my first, I said I wanted the epi and I was already 9+ cm. the nurse said if I could sit still, I could get it. Somehow I sat still. The thing about the epi is that it takes a while to catch up if you're already that far progressed - took mine about 45 mins and at that point I was ready to push. I could still feel the contractions but it took the edge off.
