Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
when the lights went out along the east coast?
I remember this because I had just started dating DH and we were in NYC! It was so scary!

I was working at Chuck E Cheese (I was a manager) in West Islip. You wouldn't believe how many people were fighting me to stay. Then went to the Commack location to "shut them down" properly, then a 1 hour trip in traffic from Commack to Nesconset (my home). Oh vey!!

I was at work....walked down 22 flights of stairs and waited for my DH to meet me. We stayed in the city until 2:30am, when we finally got a ride home. Arghhhh...it was a LONG, hot night. So by the time we got home, all I wanted was a shower and our bed!!

OMG, that was 5 years ago! Time flies. I was in my lab and the lights went out and we just were searching for flashlights, making sure the birds were okay (because it was HOT and the ventilation system was out along with the lights).
We only heard later that ALL of NY went out. It was just the University of MD that had an issue in Maryland.

We were in New Hampshire at a B&B - we missed it all! We still talk about how we feel cheated out of a good blackout!

OMG yes! My 16 and 20 year old SILs from Israel had arrived the day before, and I was so worried they were out and wouldn't figure out how to get home!!
And I walked from next to the WTC to 94th Street.

I was playing in the backyard with my son. He was only 1 1/2 then. Time really flies!
My DH was working in the city. He walked to his parents house in Jackson Heights.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was in lower Manhattan, at grad school, on the 16th floor of a building. I was so panicked b/c it reminded me of 9/11. I walked down toward the SI ferry, b/c I still lived on SI then. My parents were in Aruba, and my sister was away for the day in Shelter Island. I remember trying frantically to get in touch with my then 97 year old grandmother b/c she was alone in Brooklyn.
I sat by the ferry terminal and waited for DH (then FH) to meet me. He walked down from 31st St.

Yup, I was literally just about to get in the elevator at work to go home, I was on the 17th floor. SO happy the lights went out just as I was about to get on. It then took me 2.5 hours to drive my 7 mile commute home. Like everyone else, I was in complete panic thinking there was another terrorist attack.

Getting my nails done because we were leaving for Hawaii the next morning.
We actually got out the next day but not until afternoon after sitting in Kennedy airport which had no electricity so no air conditioning, no running water in the bathrooms, no stores open. It was an experience but we made it to Hawaii!

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
OMG, YES! It was the weirdest day EVER. I had very recently broken up with my ex, moved to NY, and was out at the barn. We still had power for a while after most of the lights went out so I didn't know until I went to leave that there were problems. Someone came into the barn and said "All of the lights on northern boulevard are out."
I was like
I called my parents to see if they had heard of anything and they said "The lights are out all over the northeast!" Then they told me my ex-boyfriend called me to see how I was... WEIRD. Not sure why he didn't call my cell phone. I called him back and we chatted and it was weird... (We were only broken up a few weeks after about 4 or 5 years together. He lived OOS, where I just moved from...)
I stayed at the barn for a few hours... I was brand new there and didn't know many people, so this wound up being a really nice bonding experience actually. After a few hours, we realized it wasn't getting any better, so we all left to carefully drive home. I lived about a 20-25 minute drive from the barn. It was terrifying (as it was dark by then), but all major intersections had cops directing traffic. I went to my parents' house and we had a little backyard GTG with our neighbors.
So weird. It feels like it was more than a decade ago...

We were at Jericho Terrace looking at wedding halls. At first we thought they just lost power. It was a nightmare driving home.

I was working at Hallmark and got sent home. The best part of that whole night was sitting outside on the deck of my parents' house and seeing all the stars. Without all the light pollution it was amazing.

Same here. They let us all go home. I went straight out to DH's house from Ronkonkoma to Malverne. It took forever but they were one of the first towns to get electric back and I knew that is were I wanted to be. We all gathered there with the AC on

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I didn't lose power! I was shopping at a mall about to go back to school and the power went out, but since the mall has so many windows it didn't seem like anything. I drove home, the lights were out except for those in my village, and I went home to CAC, cable and home made cooking! My parents live upstate and their electricity is supplied by a different provider and we didn't lose any power, so we got to watch everyone else who did on the tv.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
at work
then walked home across town to my apartment
Jake was suppose to come over- and pick me up and take me back to long island
he got to the city at 1am
it was so freaky sitting on my roof deck up 17 stories- and not seeing 1 light in NYC
since it was the 14th- I had no money- I didn't get paid till the 15th back then- so my neighbor and high school friend bought me and my friend pizza- the only food that was open
