DH & I (we were only dating at the time) were in Baltimore for the Orioles vs Yankee game! Everyone was calling us to see if we were affected...DH was thrilled to be away since he would have been in NYC with no subway!!!!

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was at work on 52nd street...I was actually pretty darn scared at first, not sure what it was. We evacuated the building and I had to walk across the 59th street bridge all the way to my apartment in Astoria! That was like a 2 1/2 hour walk, I think. It was actually kinda fun! I LOVED having the next day off. I just hung out in Astoria park and got some sun!
Wow can't believe that was 5 years ago....

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
when the blackout happened......everyone at work was freaking out b/c our underground parking garage had electronic doors! so some strong guys we worked with had to manually get that sucker open!! everyone wanted to hop in their cars and get home asap before traffic became a nightmare and here we are held hostage by a garage door I was soooooo grateful to be working 5 minutes from home that day!! we proceeded to my MIL's house and had a massive family BBQ of any food she had in her fridge!
it was great having the next day off from work- although the uncompassionate company I worked for actually wanted people to come in!! they said "but you only live 5 minutes away?" why would I go sit at a desk for 8 hours when I can't even turn on my PC!!! glad I left that jerky company.
ETA- btw, can I just say that the blackout taught me a huge lesson not to rely on paying for everything with my debit card!! now I try to have at least a little cash on me at all times.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
Good point about the debit card:
I was walking across Madison Ave and 54 and looked up and saw no street lights, then i noticed none of the stores had lights, I walked all the way downtown to 18th and 1st and luckily met my roomate, we lived in jersey city at the time so we then walked all the way down to the Ferry and waited forever to get on one, once we got to Jersey we had to take a bus home, I didnt get home till 11pm

I was at work when the blackout happened. I was supposed to meet DH after work (only he was not DH yet, he just my boyfriend).
When the power went out we could not get in touch and I was stuck in downtown Brooklyn. My wonderful future DH walked from his office on East 48th Street in Manhattan to my job in downtown Brooklyn to make sure that I was OK.
We wound up at a friends house - he family started BBQing everything they had in the fridge and we had a feast that night. The next day we went to the beach to escape the heat.

I was at my apartment waiting for Stephanie (Sunny) to come over. She arrived right after the black out occurred. She went home. I then BBqed with my neighbors all the things that were going to spoil.

I was with a client in Jersey City. I fought my way onto a ferry to 38th St and West Side Highway. I walked across town to my apt at 40th and 2nd. Then I walked up 29 flts of stairs in the dark to my apt!
All this in heels and carrying a computer

i worked for a tv station in midtown so we thought it was just our building then we thought it was an attack since we had had numerous bomb scares. I walked over the 59th street bridge to get home I was like oh no not again (did it for 9/11 too)

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was at work...and where I work it was very odd that we didn't know it was going to happen. Emergency lights came on in the building and a woman work with said she's been working here for 30 years and never saw those lights go on, she thought they were just a "prop"

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
DH and I had been on vacation that week and were finally on our way home. We were in the car and all the radio stations went out for a second, then some came back. We kept driving toward home and then turned around and went to my mother's instead.
I was very lucky I wasn't at work!

I was at work
Ditto this. Trying to decide to stay here or meet my SIL. I ended up meeting my SIL and then trekking it over to my boss's apartment. Along the way I found a friend randomly near Penn Station and she tagged along.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the boards, and I figured what better way to introduce myself than to share my "blackout story"! It just so happens that the blackout occurred the day of my rehearsal dinner for my wedding! All of the traffic lights were not functioning, the roads were chaotic, and most of my bridal party opted to not show up at the church! So, my husband and I, along with my stepdaughter and my parents were the only ones at the candle-lit church! To top it off, the restaurant where we were supposed to have our rehearsal dinner closed because of the blackout, leaving us with nowhere to celebrate! I spent the night and the following day sweating it out that the lights would come on by Saturday (the day of our wedding). Thank God they did!

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was working on 46th St. in Times Square, my first thought was F^$&$%&$K another F&$%&%G power outage! Because I worked in a 4 story walk up with OLD wiring that was prone to frequent outages. So naturally I went down to Rosie O'Gradys to ask them to flip the breaker and when they told me everyone was out I got that sinking feeling .
Soon I realized I just had to lock up and start walking. DH walked down to me from the WTC on 9/11 and I knew he wouldn't be leaving his building this time. So I walked from 46th and 7th to across from the WTC.
Spent some time with him and then walked to SIL's apt on 26th and 3rd. As it got dark I did not enjoy this leg of my trip. Man it was a scorcher that night! I remember stopping in a deli for some of the last cold-ish Coronas
Next day, my office was still not powered up so my boss had his daughter drive me back home upstate. I think the subways were still sketchy and I knew the Port Authority would be a zoo....
Crazy!

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
Yep. I was at work. I was a BM at a catering hall & we were prepping for a Sweet 16. The poor girl had lost her father earlier that year & then her sweet 16 got cancelled b/c they declared a state of emergency. She had it the next week, but I felt awful for her. I would have had it by candle light for her if I could.
Then we went to MILs house & lit all of our fire pits (we have 3...DH is a little bit of a pyro) and swam in the pool & made smores.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
It was my last day of work and DH had reservations to take me to Nobu.
We ended up walking across the 59th st. bridge and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in his apt (after walking up 34 flights).
The view of a dark manhattan was crazy.
