Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was at work and found it all really exciting. First we went to a bar down the street to rescue the beer - we couldn't let it get warm! Then everyone headed home when we realized the power wasn't coming back up.

It did take me forever and a day to get home that day, but once I got home I was disappointed because I had power, I kinda felt like I was missing out on a big event - the town I live in gets power from a neighboring town with it's own power station that is off the grid.

YES!! I was working in downtownn NYC and had vivid reminders of 9-11.

It was HOT as hell and I walked with my friends across the Brooklyn Bridge into Sunset Park.

My friends mom picked us up and then DH (then BF) picked me up. We drove to NJ and kept driving until we found an air conditioned hotel

I was at work and got sent home...we bbq'd that night with the neighbors and went in their pool, there was nothing else to do. Since we live in Eastern Suffolk, we got our electricity back late that night, but I didn't have work the next day b/c Garden City didn't have electricity yet!

I was at work on the phone with my mom when the lights went out. I was working in NYC and she was at work in Long Beach. We both were like "woah, the lights just went out"...who knew they wouldn't come back on! Thank god I lived in Chelsea, so I just walked home with a few co-workers.

DH (BF at the time) took the boat out and laid around all day and fished. THEN at night we had this bright idea to go out on a friend's boat. That was one of the scariest/greatest experiences ever. It was like getting swallowed by darkness. . .we almost killed ourselves trying to dock.

YES!
I was working in midtown Manhattan and I remember originally everyone thought it was a terrorist attack Chat Icon Once we all realized it was the blackout, my bosses, coworkers and I walked down the 50 flights of stairs to get outside; it was just So surreal ..

What was the weirdest/scariest was when it grew darker and you could hardly see a foot in front of you since there were no street lights, etc. I remember thinking there is NO way I can walk through the streets like thisChat Icon Seeing people just hanging out on the streets or in building lobbies, because they had nowhere to go

I hung out at my old bosses apartment on the West Side for awhile and it was a walkup and SO hot as we had no AC Chat Icon And my Daddy Chat Icon (God bless his soul) drove into Manhattan to pick me up and take me home to Westchester.

Oh and I remember I wasn't officially even dating DH yet, we were only doing the flirtation thing Chat Icon but he kept calling to check up on me because he was worried. He was out of town on the West Coast for business and but was constantly in touch. I remember my Dad saying "this one is a keeper" and I was like "but I haven't even gone out on a date with him yet Chat Icon (Dad was right , of course Chat Icon)

Walked from Chelsea in Manhatten over the 59th st. bridge most of the way to Shea Stadium and caught a cab. My FH at the time waited in NYC for me...so we ended up apart for the night and then a few years later forever Chat Icon

Yep, I had come home from camp (where I was working) feeling crappy, so I came home to take a nap. I put on the AC since it was really hot, and remember waking up a little while later because it was so hot in the room - then I went downstairs where my mom was panicking that the whole country had no power and the world was ending.

Oh how can I forget that day...

The day before my bday and I was in an edit on 36th and Broadway on the 17th Floor when the TVs all died at the same time.

We walked down the stairs and stood outside for a bit. I then WALKED and walked and walked...over the 59th Street bridge and into Queens...all the way to Jamaica Hospital (it was close to 8 miles!) and I had Old Navy platform flip flops on. DH picked me up and we drove home at dusk (so weird because you couldn't really see anything.

Thank GOD I had a walked buddy (a coworker)

What a crazy day!

Freaking out.

1 bc I thought it was a terrorist attack. I was trying to call my friend in the miltary to find out what he knew.

2. bc I was a bank teller and we had no alarms and customers in the bank. We didn't get notification to close for a few hours so we just had to sit there.

I was in lower Manhattan. Managed to get back to my apartment in Bay Ridge in about 2 hours and spent the remainder of the evening drinking with the neighbors while waiting for DH to make it home.

YES!!

I was standing at my boss's desk and we were going over something..her office faces Macys Herald Square...and then we both stopped talking and looked outside and said "Did you just notice what I noticed?" We freaked a little bc 9-11 was so recent...then we evacuated and I had to help my 8 mos . preggo coworker down 11 flights of stairs. Then I walked across town to meet DH and we drove to my parents house in Queens.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I remember being mad because it was the day I was supposed to book my wedding! I had just gotten engaged 2 weeks before
I remember leaving my office at 39th & Park, walking over the 59th street bridge then somewhere along that route we were able to get a cab and head to Fresh Meadows (my mom's house)

then I remember sitting in the backyard drinking wine while she bbq'd stuff she had in the fridge.
We also were worried because my grandmother was on oxygen at the time but luckily had enough left in her portables until the power came back on

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was a nervous wreck! We thought it may have been another terroist attack and my aunt and mother were stuck on the subway, but were able to get out fine, when they got home we all had a bbq and party at my now DH's mom's house, so it turned out to be a fun time in the end.

we just landed in Minneapolis to visit my friend in Minnesota. DH and I were excited that we were not in NY. Chat Icon We both wold have been stuck in the city. Plus DH was so glad that I booked us on a 8AM flight...I got a lot of slack for not letting him sleep in. Then, when we saw what was happening on the hotel's TV he thanked me. Chat Icon

I remember leaving work not knowing why the street lights weren't working. I drove to my ex's house (bf at the time) and stayed there until going to work the next day.....he had a generator so we had lights just were limited to what we could turn on.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was in an ELEVATOR when the lights went out. I'll never forget it. The ladies in the elevator with me freaked out a bit. I remember being more annoyed at the freak out than actually being stuck. We weren't in there too long thankfully. I think Lynbrook still had power because my EXBF and I drove to his fathers house and stayed there for the night.
