Question about baggage and weight limits posted by an airline

we just checked the weight limits on the 2 airlines we're traveling with (leaving tomorrow night).

they both are the same - 2 checked bags per person, (23 kg) 51 lbs each.

we're each checking in only 1 bag, but one of them (yes, mine Chat Icon) MIGHT be a little over 50 lbs.

since we're allowed 100 lbs worth of baggage per person, if my bag ends up weighing 60 lbs, do you think they would charge me for that?

Yes they will. They go by bag not combined. I would take some out of yours and put it in the lighter one.

10 pounds they would definitely charge you for. It really depends also on the person checking you in. I have had so many run-ins with weight. I have gotten away with it many times, but other times I have had to pay for overweight baggage.

Bring a second bag, you may do shopping. Chat Icon

When ever I fly British Airways they just let me bring whatever I have had, and when I come home to LI, I shop like there is no tomorrow. I have never been charged. But my concern would be that 50lbs is a lot when you are going to have to carry your bags on some sort of public transport from the airport into the city centre, than onto your hotel, thats one heavy bag for a week!

What have you got in there?

I had to pay an extra $75 on United when I flew to Scotland this summer because I was over the weight...Chat Icon

However, coming home from Europe there were 4 of us with 3 suitcases and they let us check in all together and totalled up all the weight so even though the bags were over we didn't have to pay extra.

Take a few things out of the large bag and put them in a smaller one. You are gonna need the room. Shopping in Paris is great (although I do prefer the shopping in London even more so!)Chat Icon

yea, not sure how much shopping we'll be doing. prices from what I hear are very high there. so many Europeans come to NYC to shop - the value is much better here.

I would however love to come home with a gorgeous new bag, cheese and wine. we'll see....

yes they will definitely charge you!! It goes by the weight of each individual bag and they will go out of their way to make sure people pay. I always make sure that I leave 2-3 lbs of room - b.c I know I have a bag scale and I weighed my bags at home on my regular scale and they both came out the same but the airline said it was 50lbs even - so I don't trust that their scales are always 100% accurate.

Of course every once in a blue moon you get a nice sky cap who says this doesn't feel like 50 and doesn't weigh it - but I wouldn't count on that.

The reasoning behind it is that people have to lift these bags. At least that's the reason I told the people who were upset they had to pay - some people had bags 100+ poundsChat Icon that 's a small person!

Right so if a passenger pays $50 extra, that airline employee can NOW lift the bag that weighs the extra 10lbs. Ridiculous.

My suitcase was 4lbs over coming home from WDW. I had 2 bags I was checking. I had a very small kids rolling suitcase inside one of the suitcases that was over. So, instead of checking 2 bags, I took the small suitcase out and checked THREE (2 under my name, one under DS's) Tell me how that makes sense? It doesn't. It's just a scam to get more money from the passengers.

The fine is supposed to act as a deterrant from checking overweight bags and I am sure the airline would throw in extra fuel costs for carrying more cargo.

I think charging for one bag is a scam.

Well according to the girl who helped me, it was because one person can't lift a bag over 50lbs. The fuel aspect is nonsense since you could have 55lbs in one bag (which is "overweight") or 55lbs TOTAL in the 2 you are allowed per person. It's all about making money however they can Chat Icon

I agree about charging for one bag also. Good thing Southwest doesn't do that!
