You are in a situation where you need something translated from Japanese. So you ask people around you who are obviously of Asian decent (though you are not sure whether they are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc) if they speak Japanese. Would you consider that person "ignorant"?

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

Yup. I don't think it's that difficult to tell whether an Asian person is Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Philippino or Thai and it bothers me that people don't take the time to learn. The WORST is when they call Asian people "Oriental" Chat Icon

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

I don't think that would be ignorant. A lot of times people will ask me if I speak Spanish b/c guess I could look like I could be hispanic (I'm actually Italian/Irish and took German in HS so I'm of no help.Chat Icon ) But I wouldn't think the person was ignoract.

Really? I guess I would never think of it. I don't think I would have ever done that, but if I have, I guess I feel bad now.Chat Icon

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

When someone ar my office needs something translated, they send a firm wide email out asking if anyone can translate Japanese (or what ever language it is).

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

I think its all about how the question is asked...

I would NEVER go up to someone, "Hey, you're Asian, can you read Japanese?"

HOWEVER, I would have no problem asking, "Can you understand Japanese, by any chance?"

See I feel the same way. I've had people ask me if I speak Indian languages as well as Middle Eastern languages and I've never been insulted or thought that the person was ignorant because they read my ethnicity wrong. Chat Icon

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

Yes, I don't think that is in particularly good taste. They may be asian and been born here - 2nd or 3rd gen and not speak a word of any asian languages. That would be like people asking me to translate hebrew because I am Jewish.

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

I can see where it could be taken either way, but I don't think it makes anyone ignorant to do this. How do they know if any one of these people know more than one language.
Example, how would anyone know if I spoke, Spanish, Italian - you won't know unless you ask.

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

No I don't-Did you say, Do you speak Japanese? I find nothing wrong with that. Actually as part of my job I have to ask people what other language they speak according to their physical appearance. I am pretty good at telling if a person is Japanes, Chinese, Korean by their look

This is EXACTLY how the question was asked. And 100% of the people asked were incredibly insulted. Chat Icon

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

No, I dont' think it is ignorant at all! I don't know the difference between Japanese, Chinese, etc. I have been told the difference by some of my chinese friends, but I just still can't tell Chat Icon

Plus, at my job there are chinese people who speak Japanese also.

Re: Do you think this is ignorant?

I think it might offend people. But you never know who speaks what.

I am the daughter of an Italian immigrant and speak Italian but I don't think I really look it. I was in a pizzeria once and these guys were making disgusting comments. I looked and them and said - in Italian - "I understand every word you are saying." They FREAKED and I got a free lunch!

This took place in an environment where interpreters of all different languages are often needed.

Also, if I was 4th or 5th generation latina and I did not speak Spanish, I personally would not be offended if someone asked me if I spoke/understood it just because I looked it.

I agree. I am 4th generation Polish (and other mixes) and people are always speaking to me in Polish. i have to tell them that I don't speak polish and they never believe me! I don't get offended and think that they are ignorant.

That is very true...so why would it be ignorant or offensive to ask?
