Im sorry this thread is almost funny. Its not ignorant to me...I mean you dont know , so whats the big deal, a blonde haired white girl could speak Japenese so whats the big deal.
I wouldnt get offeneded if someone asked me if I spoke Polish when Im German....

I agree - the way the question is posed makes a difference. "What ARE you?" sounds rude, IMO.
My MIL, bless her heart, said something similar to me once. She was asking what my family does for the holidays...what she MEANT to ask was "what are your traditions"? What she SAID was "So, what do YOUR PEOPLE do?" My DH said to her "Mom, they're not aliens, ya know!"

I get asked all the time if I am Italian or French, no one ever guesses what I am- 1/2 german and 1/2 Puerto Rican. and I dont get offended.
however when I went to puerto rico and mexico the natives automatically spoke to me in spanish so I guess in their eyes I look of decent.
sayining so what are you- well I guess it can be rude but sometimes people are just as uncomfortable to ask too, like they are interested in you male or female and they dont know how to ask, nothing wrong with that.

I agree. I also hate when I answer AMERICAN people fight with me and tell me "no, you have to be something else, you can't be American. Um..yes, I can. My family has been in Ameria for over 4 generations on one side and 6 on the other, so I AM American!

exactly people will always get offened. Like when the movie Memoirs of a Geisha came out many were offended because the actors used were not Japanese.....

true but you know what, then those people need to get a different job- they are the translators right? isnt that what they are there for? and if they are asked to translate something and they cant they should not be offended-
