I know what you are getting at, but there was really no time for an email. This person was trying to help a Japanese woman because she was in hysterics over something... he was only trying to help her but all he got was nasty looks and nastier comments.

but then instead of SOME of us being ignorant, we'd ALL be ignorant.

I would not consider it ignorant.
I have a White Jewish friend who DOES speak Japanese.
I have a dark skinned Columbian friend who does not know what the work "Hola" means, but she does read and write in Hebrew.
And, people come up to me speaking Spanish ALL THE TIME and I usually know what they're saying because I took 6 years worth of Spanish classes. I'm Italian, but I don't speak fluent Italian.
So, to make a long story short, I think that with all of the language classes being taught these days, there's nothing wrong with assuming that someone speaks a particular language because it's very possible that they do.

I do not think the question is ignorant, but at the same time, I can see how it would strike a nerve with someone who has a particular sensitivity about being mistaken for another ethnicity. I don't think there was anything wrong with asking. There are always going to be people with sensitivities that we can't predict.

i'm sorry but i really cant tell the diff...everyone looks diff, as red said above...u cant really distinguish the differences...now, that being said, i took the test and got a 6/18....some guy here who is chinese took the test and got a 4/18....he said the same thing, u cant really ever tell!!

I couldn't agree more with this statement.
And one of my co-workers who is African-American one time got the Korean/Chinese/Japanese newspaper from the newstand guy in the corner(he knows him) and he was on the train and pretended he was reading the paper. He said all the looks he got were the funniest and he got such a good laugh. He said even those from Asian descent looked at him but didn't say anything. When he told me the story, I thought it was pretty funny.
