VBAC?
I'm asking this for my cousin, does anyone know of any doctors that do a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section) or is that totally unheard of?

Re: VBAC?
There are docs that will do it, but not many because there are serious risks involved. I have a cousin who tried a VBAC a few months ago, and not to scare you, but her uterine wall collapsed, she almost died, her baby almost died, and she can't have anymore children as a result. It doesn't happen all too often, but for liability reasons that's why there's a big push against it.
I don't know of any specific doctors that do it though...

Re: VBAC?
there are definitely doctors that do it, but I think it depends on the reason for your 1st c-section
some women are not good candidates for the VBAC

Re: VBAC?
I believe stonybrook midwives has a VERY high success rate with Vbacs. They have an open information night pretty frequently. Not sure when though.

Re: VBAC?
Whether she will find an OB willing to do it will depend on her reason for her first csection. If she is not a good candidate she won't find an OB willing to do it - if she IS a good candidate she should find someone if she shops around. But she should make sure she is a good candidate first b.c the risks are pretty serious if you do end up having an issue with VBACs.
I know my group will consider it IF and only IF you are a perfect candidate and certain conditions are met. I'm delivering at Columbia Presbyterian. Tell her to have a full discussion with her about the risks to her AND the baby so she is fully informed about them if she thinks VBAC is for her.

Re: VBAC?
I think the best option for a VBAC is a midwife. But I do know Dr. Jessica Jacob (in Manhasset) does VBACs.

Re: VBAC?
Dr Hanauer was willing to let me VBAC. Unfortuately my cervix never changed despite hours/days of contractions.
There are risks with VBAC, but if all other things are equal (no other medical conditions, and close monitoring during labor, etc) the risks are not necessarily that different than the risks of a surgery. There are risks of uterine ruptures or collapse.
