3rd grade goody bag ideas

I was hoping to not have to do this, but apparently they're still doing goody bags for birthdays at school.

I have to send in snacks and goody bags for 15 kids.

What are people putting in goody bags these days for that age? DS will be 9. He's too old for the toddler type stuff like sidewalk chalk, etc. I don't want all the plastic crap that gets thrown out.

TIA

We don't do birthday goody bags but in the past for like Christmas I would go to dollar tree and get something
I prefer to give one nicer thing then a bag of little things

If the class is 20 students or less, I agree with this. Get coloring books, or a regular book, or some sort of toy you like at a dollar store. If there are more than 20 students that might cost over $20 then... so maybe just some nice candy, like one nice lollipop per kid or a chocolate bar. Or maybe sams/costco/bjs has something like a huge package of playdoh, where each kid can get 1 color. 3rd graders still like playdoh, or a new set of crayons. They really do.

i'm from NJ... do you have a Five Below near you? they have a bunch of great things for $5 and under. you could get each kid something decent for $3 or $4 rather than a bunch of little things. and like above, the Dollar Store has decent stuff, too.
Does your PTA do anything?? Our PTA runs a "school store" during lunch times. they sell little junk like erasers, pencils, candy, bookmarks.... SO they sell "gift certificates" that you can give out for your kid's birthdays. so like you can buy a .50 or $1 gift card for each kid in the class, and they get to shop for their own thing. the kids LOVE being able to pick stuff out. and the money goes to the PTA/school so its a win-win.

ITA! I'm from NJ as well and the PTA does the school store once a week to each class. Many birthday kids give out $1 or $2 GC's to the school store to each class.
Last year my DS was in 3rd grade and I went to the class a read a book about the beach and gave all the kids beach balls. Got them from Oriental Trading. Kids and teachers loved it.
My DS's birthday is the end of May so I kept with the summer theme.

Wow - so glad we don't have to send in things to school.

I'd do something like a gift cert to a local ice cream place and a pencil...
