I know people who married rich men and literally just take care of themselves. They have housekeepers, even people who cook (and it amazes me that in one case, the guy actually does the grocery shopping when the woman does not work or cook). So it's not even like the days are spent cleaning, cooking, and shopping, but just taking care of themselves, working out, going out to lunch, etc.
wow. 
so i guess the answer to red's question would be - sometimes, YES. 
must be weird to not have some sort of adult responsibility!

I did for about 6 months while I was finishing up grad school and writing my thesis. But I was working again about a month before graduation.

nope. I think dh would be all over me w/ money spending and all that. Telling how & when to spend the money since he would be the bread winner. I've worked since I was 14 so I can't see myself no working, Unless I had a lot of money & did exciting stuff every week!

My aunt did this.
She did eventually have children, but I was 6 was the oldest was born & she had been married for abotu 4 years at that time & she did not work during that time. Her husband was (is) a lawyer, but they didn't have cooks & maids & things liek peopel mentioned above.
Even as a kid I thougth it was odd, b/c I knew she had gone to school to become a gym techer. That is something so specific, I thought it was odd that she didn't persue it.
Sometimes I think I could do it, but I would definitely have to do all the household stuff in order to feel useful & I would also look into volunteering part time.

I was referring to the fact that not too long ago, it was expected that many women stay home and take care of the household while their husbands were at work.
I never said anything about women sitting around not working.
it was a question...
I didn't think this was anything "new"
Woman working has been going on for some time now...
didn't think that was funny...
wasn't it the start of the whole women's movement?

Absolutely! If we were set financially on just his salary, I would.
I would keep my teaching job at night because I love it but I wouldn't work during the day if I didn't have to.

I don't work and feel totally comfortable with it I take care of all the household things so my DH does not have to deal with any of it
I am pregnant right now and will be a stay at home mom
I love not working and really never get bored
I always have something to do

can't say i know these people, but have heard of it...
just don't look at them as the norm...or what to base any kind of comparison on.
Marrying rich has always been that has gone on...
times haven't changed that...

yes, but at think at some point it went from being an option, that you could work if you wanted, that now it is the norm & even inappropriate if you don't work.

I would definitely do it. I would love to have time to cook every night. I would love to teach a CCD class and volunteer at church. It would be great if I got all the housework done while DH is at work, so our time together isn't him doing laundry and me cleaning a bathroom. I would do it in a heartbeat.

the question was different than life back then too...
Women never really "not worked" and did nothing...
they had children.....they married younger than most now....
which makes it different then the question posed...So it is kinda hard to compare the to saying times have changed...

I wouldn't feel uncomfortable at all being a housewife. Running a home and keeping up with all the responsiblities and chores is a full time job in itself. There is so much that just doesn't get done because I don't have the time.

I had a cousin who didn't work for a little under a year, and I know aunts and uncles were saying behind her back that they didn't know why an able-bodied person of 26 wasn't working (it just isn't the norm in my family).

I am not working right now, but that is because I just finished up my masters degree and am currently trying to find a job.
It feels a little weird because I worked my whole life and dh is currently studying and working really hard. So, right now I am trying to make his life easier, since I have the spare time to do so.

i don't think anyone is judging you....
but i think that is how they would feel. I know i would feel like the money that came into the house wasn't really mine...
WHen i went to buy a gift for my DH, with his money, i would feel weird.
I need to have a sense of control over myself.
But you are right...to each their own

I'm sure it's just that it's not the norm in my family, and all the other cousins were working. Plus, she's a little high maintenance, so when she's all having a personal trainer and getting her nails done each week it's like she isn't really doing all the house stuff either. I understand if your day is spent grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning--I think I could spend my days like that too. I would love, love to have gourmet meals each night, and I love to cook, but there is just never enough time when working.
Plus most of my aunts and uncles (and parents) work in education (my parents both work in colleges), and I think they might feel like I wasted my education (I have a master's and a doctorate) if I didn't work when I didn't have kids. I think I would volunteer, because I feel like I am good at what I do, and want to make a difference.
