Re: a NEW Yankee Stadium now?
The Yankees organization is footing the bill for the stadium. The city is putting in money to expanding parks in the area.

Re: a NEW Yankee Stadium now?
The money is not going to go to homeless people or schools because the organizations are paying for the bills, not the city. The teams are not taking away city money. City money will go towards new subways needed and parking garages but the actual stadium is being paid out of the owners pockets.
Does either team need a new stadium? Probably not. But Yankee stadium did have that beam fall a couple of years ago (i think it was in 99?) I would hate to see them wait until a serious incident occured.
Yankee stadium is OLD. Yes it was redone in the 70's, but it's still old. Even Shea is pretty old. Plus they will make more money with the new stadiums. More luxury boxes, more food courts, more of everything. I'll miss Yankee stadium, but I do think it's time for a new one to build a legacy in.

I think we all know the teams are footing the bills for this not the city...we are saying hypothetically because it will never happen but that the TEAMS should be putting that money back into the community. Whos gonna make more money? Not the employees Im sure, The food stand workers, box waitress etc make next to nothing now....I dount that will change.
But the Teams will make more money.....I bet the hot dogs are now $8 and yet taste the same ....and I also do not agree that Shea nor Yankee Stadium is that outdated or a dangerous place at all.
I could see if talks had been going on about how the structures were damaged/in need of millions dollar repairs where it made sense to spend 800 million, but I dont see IMO.

Re: a NEW Yankee Stadium now?
I know most people are not going to agree with me, but I find the timing of the announcement about the new stadium very interesting. It's like as soon as shea and the mets are in the news for their new stadium, Steinbrenner needs to steal the spotlight.
It's just a pet peeve of mine, b/c I have seen so many times over the years where the Mets have a terrific game and the yanks lose, and the yanks still get the back page of the papers. I keep seeing news coverage comparing people's reaction to the west side stadium to yankees stadium, and I feel like it's not even an issue! They have nothing to do with one another!
The other thing I keep hearing is how Steinbrenner is excited about how the new stadium is going to have more luxury boxes...whoop dee doo! That does nothing for the average New York fan!

Re: a NEW Yankee Stadium now?
Like most realities, this is just another one which people will have to get used to.
The reality is that baseball isn't for the poor or even the middle class any more. Those who can afford the seats go to the games and those who can't watch the game on TV or are Bleecher Creatures. However, Yankee stadium does allow you to bring in your own food. I find this really interesting.
As far as Shea stadium goes, there is a really big problem with wind and aerodynamics. Other teams don't really like to play there. There is a similar situation at Yankee stadium. If you ever had seats where you sit under the over hang, you get horrible wind burn. It isn't pleasant!
The reality is that both of these teams are getting a new stadium, ticket prices will go up, and people will still go to see the teams they love play.
The Giants are getting a new stadium as well. The Jets will eventually get a new stadium, maybe in Queens. It shall be interesting.
