Plus Size and TTC
So I was the infamous one who started the plus size brides board on LIW.
I thought I'd see how many of us are now TTC and could use each others help and support with those challenges that affect us plus sizers...
Anyone else out there besides me?

Re: Plus Size and TTC
Hi Kara!
We wanted to enjoy being married for a bit. We originally said we'd wait until November, but I'm nervous at how long it will take. Between my age and being overweight. So we started this month! I've been taking PNV for 30days already to prep.
I'm sorry about your miscarriage, but I'm glad to hear you are trying again. I'll watch for your update.
I'm definetly still getting use to the lingo. I just had the wedding lingo down, and its time for new terms. ;)
Has your doctor gone over any concerns for pregnancy and being overweight? My doctor just said to "have fun."

Re: Plus Size and TTC
Oh jeez -- yeah my Dr. is a worry-wart. But I am 39 ( ) now too so that is an issue as well. But he says there is no reason I should not have a happy and healthy or or both!! I was carrying twins actually!
I didn't mean it was about time you ttc, I meant that you came over to LIF, silly!! I would never insinuate when someone should ttc, it is such a personal decision!!
Talk to you tomorrow, maybe I will have news (I hope I hope!! )

Good luck Kara!
And I certainly wasn't insulted. I've been on and off LIF when I have time, but I haven't had a whole lot to post about in general.
If you don't mind my asking, who are your OB/GYNs? Mine is very layed back and not concerned (at least not as of yet), but I've heard some can be very negative towards overweight women.

I need to get a new one, since I just moved from LI.
I need to drop some weight and my cholesterol's high, but I'm getting a little antsy now.
I used to work with a woman who was overweight and 39, and she wanted to drop the weight first, but her doc said, "Don't wait too long, because you might want to have 2."

My Doc was very supportive when I went in. I am trying to watch my diet and go to the gym though because i have started taking glucophage for polycystic ovarian syndrome and figured losing a little weight would only help. But my doc was negative towards me ar all.

Re: Plus Size and TTC
I'm plus size and my docotrs never made a big thing about the weight. When I did get PG, (before my M/C), my OB just wanted me to be careful what I ate and not gain too much weight. She said she would be thrilled if I continued to follow a Weight Watchers type diet.

I am plus size also and my doctor was very strict with the weight issue. Too strict for my taste so I changed doctors this month.
I've lost about 42 pounds on WW so far and will contintue to do so until I get PG.

Re: Plus Size and TTC
I was a plus size before getting pregnant. My Dr didn't tell me to lose weight but I decided to go to WW and 1 month later I lost 10 pounds and was pregnant after 14 months of trying. WW does not allow pregnent women to get weighed in. They used to but for some reason they don't anymore.

Re: Plus Size and TTC
My OB told me I have metabolic syndrome -- which basically means I am way overweight and not metabolizing the bad cholesterol. Etc..
I joined WW in February but have not been nearly as good as I should be. I went off when I was pg because they will not let you weigh in (they are not Drs.), and then we started travelling so much after the mis, that I was all over the place. I am now staying put for a while - I bought a treadmill and walk 20 min- hald hour every day, besides about a half hour walk in the park with the dog almost daily. No alcohol, no white flour, no refined sugars. I try to eat lots of whole grains and green, leafy veggies. Lots of water and teas.
Last week I lost 2 lbs but I weigh in today and I have a bad feeling...
Amy join WW if you want to lose weight, it's a great program. And we do run the risk of gestational diabetes so if you can prevent it beforehand even better. My Dr. does not want me to wait to TTC until I lose weight either because of my age, but rather he wants me to eat healthy NOW and not gain anything when I do get pg. Meanwhile I have been a chubber my whole life...

Re: Plus Size and TTC
God bless you for starting this thread!!!!
I am a plus size TTC. I don't know where to begin with how confused I am on TTC at my size and my age (41). Yup, 41!!
I went to a high risk OB/GYN for pre-pregnancy counseling. He didn't tell me to lose weight, but told me because of my age I need to get pregnant "as soon as possible." Gee, thanks Doc.
Anyway, I really want to lose weight, but I feel like most EVERYTHING I might want to do is on hold until I get pregnant and have the baby.
I need to take cholesterol medicine. Can't do it if I'm TTC. I have high BP and was on a really good med but had to change it because I'm TTC. I need foot surgery but if I get pregnant, the doc won't do it. It's all so frustrating sometimes. Thanks for letting me vent.
Baby dust to everyone!

Re: Plus Size and TTC
I've tried WW countless times in the past and it only works for me for somewhat.
My regular GP has said that my main problem is a very slow metabolism. I'm very active and eat right, so my weight is stable..I just have trouble losing.
What's worked best for me, and my husband and I are doing it together, is just counting calories. We try and keep our calorie intake to 1200 per day. By doing that I try and stay away from carbs and eat only whole grains when I do. I'm always very good during the day, but the night kills me. We've been making healthy dinners, grilled fish and veggies. It's very slow.
I'm trying to get back onto a treadmill regime but its hard with a busy work schedule. But I'm trying.

Tannika...stay positive, I know its hard. I developed a heel spur in January, and I keep thinking, how am I going to take care of a baby if my first step every morning feels like knives in my foot. But I'm having it treated. Can you do the foot surgery now while you TTC so that it is done before you get pregnant?
Luckily, I have no health or cholestoral problems, but I can understand your frustration with trying to stay healthy, but being unable to take medication.
Every time I take a allergy pill or an advil I think, I won't be able to take these when I get pregnant.

Re: Plus Size and TTC
Amerlin, I think that is too few calories. I read that even when dieting the lowest you should go is 1400. maybe that is why you are slow to lose. Also I heard if you alternate high and low calorie days that can kickstart your metabolism. As far as Dr's and weight my Mom told me when she got PG with me she was 155 lbs. The Dr told her she was way too fat and to really watch what she ate.She ended up gaining 10 lbs and after she had me lost 15. My Dr on the other hand didn't say anything at all about my weight. I did rread that if you start overweight you should only gain 15-20 lbs.

Re: Plus Size and TTC
That's interesting about the calories. I'm going to do more research on that.
My close friend was overweight (size 18/20) when she had her daughter. She said in general, she didn't gain very much weight (I'm not sure how much) and that she had little problems. She even tested negative for gestational diabetes (sp?).
Meanwhile, another friend who weighed less (size 12/14) gained a lot of weight during her pregnancy (over 60 lbs) and she had all kinds of problems and ended up testing positive for gd.
I think a lot of it has to do with the individual person.
By the way, my friend who started overweight said finding maternity clothes was a small issue but she found in most cases, especially with tops, that she was okay just going up a few sizes at the plus size stores.

Re: Plus Size and TTC
I found a neat site that outlines how to figure out how many calories our bodies actually need and how we can adjust them along with exercise to lose weight at a healthy rate. Here's the link if anyone is interested:
http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/loseweight/loseweight.html
Based on their suggestion, I'm going to up my calories for a week to 2,000, and then slowly reduce it week by week.

I know WW insists you need a minimum # of calories to keep your metabolism functioning at a good rate. That's wehre the point come in I suppose...

WW and counting calories are very similar. WW just takes calories, fat and fiber and converts them into points. I just found figuring out points tideious after a while. Many things have their calories printed directly on them and now-a-days with the interenet you can look up the calories per portion on all foods.
Kara...what's the verdict today?
