4hr Road Trip with 6m old - better to drive at night (bedtime) or early morning when he wakes up?

We have a few road trips coming up. I'm trying to decide if we should drive around 8pm when DS usually goes to sleep or drive first thing Sat morning at around 7am.

What time do you think is better?

no road trip experience on our side as of yet but i would totally go at night!

just b/c in the morning, you'll have to stop to feed the baby etc..

i would just go at night!

We are driving to Boston next month and plan on leaving in the morning. DS wakes up around 6, 630 and gets a bottle around 7, 730 so I figure we will leave around 8 and hopefully he will NAP!!!!!

I always prefer going at night so they are more likely to sleep the whole way.

We recently did a 7 hour trip with DS when he was 5 mos. We left at night about 30 minutes before his bedtime.

It was great for him, but we were EXHAUSTED.

4 hours isn't that bad though - I would leave at night.

I also bought a cheap DVD player and some baby einstein dvds. Luckily we only had to use it once each way.

We have been doing 4 hr roadtrips with both DS's since they were younger than that age

I find it better to leave in the morning after their 1st bottle

I dont like driving with babies at night and then I feel like their nightime sleep would be disturbed

We did 7 hours when DS was 7 months, we left at 9:30am ish....he was great, we did break it up, drove out to Orient point took the ferry then continued the additionl 4 hours.

We had a portable DVD player and I sat in the back with snacks and toys, he slept for about 1 hour as well!

I know with DS it wouldnt matter much, he is not much of a car sleeper so for us AM is probably better as he is in a better moood than if he was overtired at night!

A portable DVD player is a great idea. I didn't think of that since DS is still rear facing in his car seat.

Which dvd player do you have?

Where did you put your portable DVD player for your 7m old?

We drove from NY to FL with a 7 month old. We left at 5:00 - 5:30 in the morning...it worked out well for us.
We have a portable DVD player going and had food and snacks and drinks with us of course

We usually travel in the morning because the kids have always been so happy in the morning.

i do 6-7 hour drives pretty regularly and prefer night hands down because that 6+ gets cut down to 5 1/4 Chat Icon

when i do it by myself i drive during the day, but if DH is with us we try to go at night...

My Mom just held the DVD player up for him since he is rear-facing. I bought a little bag to mount it but we couldn't be bothered setting it up (yeah, we are lazy - LOL).

I got a REALLY cheap DVD player for $50. It is refurbished, but it works great. I didn't want to spend a lot because DH has a DVD player in his truck but DS couldn't see it because he was rear-facing.

I bought online from techs for less. My brother bought a lot of computer stuff from them and raved - so I gave them a try. They were awesome, and I was so happy with their pricing. Here's the link to their DVD players: Tech for Less - DVD Sorry - link doesn't work - just search DVD player. www.techforless.com

we just did a 7 hr road trip to tennessee w DD. we made sure that we drove at night time, after her bedtime. she's just too much to handle while awake. driving at night time ensures that both DH and i get a chance to take turns without worrying about the baby.
