50/50 Raffle at Charity Event - Keep or give back?
Just curious, if you win the 50/50 raffle at a charity event, do you keep it or give it back?

I have never won one, but if I won I would keep it. For me what's the point of playing if you are just going to give the money back if you won.

I would give all or most of it back...it would depend on the amount I won.

I've done both.
If there isn't a whole lot of money in the pot to start with, I have given it all back. Another time, I took some of the winnings and donated the rest back to the organization.

I think the point is to be charitable
I've only been to one fundraiser where the person didn't give any of it back.

I'd keep it because that's the point. I'd just donate the $1 to the charity if that was going to be my intentions at the end anyway...

I've never paid too close attention, but I always assumed everyone gave it back. Almost like "winning" was just a formality.

It's for charity - Give it back.
This.
And while it's never expected and not mandatory, those who don't give at least something back are usually looked at like a cheeseball.
Sounds snarky, I know. But those who travel in circles who deal with charities on a regular basis and fund raise for them, usually have the money to spare and when they don't it's usually frowned upon to some extent.
I'm not saying it's right, it's just how it goes in the world of not for profit organizations.

Give it all back. I work for a non-profit. If someone keeps the 50/50 I'm a little put-off. It's their right to do what they want but it's customary to give the money back.

Whats the point if you give it back. Don't have a raffle then. I really don't get it. Why do a 50/50 raffle if u expect the money back. Raffle off something else. Never won one but if I did I wouldn't give any of it back.

This does not sound snarky at all to me, its actually 100% true. I go to many charity events during the year

But unless you're well versed in the ways of charities and non-profits you wouldn't know this.
Until I started working for the non-profit org I work for, I had no idea. We had a 10M raffle and the dude that won, only gave back 1M and a number of people were like
I was pretty surprised until I found out that giving back the money won is more the norm.
ETA: My point is perfectly illustrated by the results of the poll.
I'm guessing not too many posters here really work with non-profits otherwise the results would be very different.

its a fund raiser. a 50/50 is not "raffling something off" but purchasing X amount of tickets for X $$ and the peron's whose ticket gets pulled wins 50% of the pot.
since the whole idea is to raise money for a specific cause, the winner ususally gives the money back. really, what are they loosing? $1-$10 in the tickets that they bought but that was their "donation"

I understand its a method of fundraising. But it seems really ridiculous to have a raffle and then look down on anyone who doesn't give the money back.

Wow that is a crazy story!!!!
Yes you are 100% right, I dont work for a nonprofit, but my DH owns a business so we are invited to a lot of charity events, so I only know how this works cause I am around it often.

I don't think its expected as much as I think it's the right thing to do.
I won a huge amount of scratch offs and lottery tickets at a recent charity event. I wrote a check for the money that I won from those and gave it to the person that the charity was for.
Many people at the charity event that won items, donated them to the family of the person that the event was for.
