Whats the point if you give it back. Don't have a raffle then. I really don't get it. Why do a 50/50 raffle if u expect the money back. Raffle off something else. Never won one but if I did I wouldn't give any of it back.
It's a method of fund raising...
I understand its a method of fundraising. But it seems really ridiculous to have a raffle and then look down on anyone who doesn't give the money back. I agree with this. I work for a non profit as well as a Social Worker. I dont believe that people look down on people that keep the $ that they won in a 50/50. Sorry, if thats the way it works then why should anyone even play into it. the 50% of the pot is more then reasonable of a profit to give to charity. Only when I read LIF threads do I see people putting a damper on things that are supposed to be fun. I do a basket auction at my job and the people DO take home the baskets. Maybe they should give them back so the consumers can use the gifts. To me that would be absurd. Big deal if they keep the $.
I'm merely speaking from experience.
I've sat in board meetings and saw the reactions on people's faces when it was said that the person who won the sweepstakes kept 90% of the purse.
I'm not saying it's right, but lets be real, the only place in the freakin' world where everyone is so PC is here on LIF.
As for items in a silent auction, no, those are not given back, nor are they expected to be given back, HOWEVER - people often pay a BOAT LOAD more than they could if they were to purchase that exact item in the store.
Again, the point of these events is to make money for the charity. I totally understand what you are saying. The bigger picture here is look at what this thread just did, it made people NOT want to play into a 50/50 ever again. Including me.

I've never won one... (and prior to reading this tread) I'd have answered I would keep it...
Now I will give it back...

I agree but then why bother running the raffle at all? Just donate to get in the door, donate while there, etc What is the point of running a raffle and where is teh fun in winning it - if you aren't really 'winning ' it? KWIM?

I just answered the question posted honestly.
No one has to contribute, and those that do understand that the money is being raised to help the organization.

The fun is in helping a worthy organization.
Believe it or not (and I'm not saying this in a snarky tone at ALL) there are people just willing to give their money to charity simply to help others.
I would have never thought this true (I'm a terrible cynic) but there are people in this world that have the means to just give for the sake of helping those less fortunate than themselves.
That's the only reason they do it.

Ita and why not just have a donation. Why even have a 50/50. Makes no sense to me. They should have a disclaimer "buy a ticket to win, but if you do,you better give it back or the organizers will think you are a cheap a-hole"

Call me a cheap a-hole, but if I win a prize, I'm keeping it.
No one knows if the person keeping the prize decides to turn around and donate some or all of it to either a friend or family member who might be down on their luck, put towards their kid's college fund, give to a charity that might be closer to their heart than the one that the other half of the 50/50 was raised for, or used on a vacation. No one knows. Let them judge, who cares.

Re: 50/50 Raffle at Charity Event - Keep or give back?
I think based on this thread, most people kept the 50% that they won and a few gave some but not all of it back to the charity. Now I am going to think twice about actually participating in those raffles. Previously I was always good for the 5-25 fee. DH and I give to causes we find worthy, but for a charity to say we really had the 50/50 event to raise the entire pot seems dishonest to me. I would much much rather the charity say here is the fee up front to attend the event. It seems so much more ethical to do so.

If organizers get annoyed that people don't give the prize back, it does seem to me that it's expected. I totally understand that you are just conveying your own experience, but it is clearly confusing for a lot of people why a charity would run a raffle if they expect people to give back what they won. If they expect that money back, then why wouldn't they just ask for donations instead of doing a raffle? I would love to donate to a charity, but I would much rather donate outright than basically buy a fake raffle ticket.

People get annoyed because they're HUMAN. Is it right? NO! But it's the truth. I'm not excusing the behavior but just try to understand where these people are coming from.
These organizations help, kids, people in need, etc. They need EVERY LAST CENT to help run. Without donations they're FINISHED.
People who work and volunteer for these groups give up their time, invest their blood sweat and tears to these organizations. So yeah, it's a little frustrating when you see someone win ten grand and give nothing back to the organization that could desperately use it.

I would give some back, not all. I donate to charities but IMO if I am trying to win something I am not gi ing it all back. If I was wealthy then I would but I'm not so for me charity starts at home

I do think it's silly when you win a contest and people expect things from you! I used to work in a place that always did a superbowl pool, but the winner was expected to bring bagels in for all who participated the monday after the game! *****! Who wants to get up extra early the day after the superbowl to buy breakfast for work b/c you WON!
Also, if you win something in a bar and your expected to buy the bar a round! This is also stupid! At least with charity it is going to a cause you obviously support, not others drunkenness! Lol

Ok, this whole thread is an eye opener. I always played with the hopes of winning. Now I doubt I will ever play. I have no problem giving money for a charity, but lets call it what it is. What's with all the code speak, and people looking down on someone for winning a prize and having the audacity for keeping it.
i agree... the incentive to pay into anything, especially a 50/50 is to get something in return... id rather just give them my money without the pretense that im going to get something back...
I must say that I agree with this too. I'd rather just write out a check for the charity. It kinda takes the excitement out of the 50/50 if the winner isn't "supposed" to keep the winnings.

Depends on the event.
I don't fault anyone for keeping the money though.

The point of the raffle is simply another way for them to raise more money than all money donated already. It's just a quick and easy way to charge a few dollars for a 50/50 - raise more money and HOPE the person gives it back.
I'd definitely give it back...would never even consider keeping it if it was for charity!

Maybe half of what I won, I'd give back, depending on how much I'd won. I don't think I would give it all back, or keep it all. I've never won a 50/50 before though.

I'm not sure what's so confusing about this? You are stating that its the "Norm" but even in a sample from LIF of random people from all over NY and surrounding states, the poll itself represents that MOST people would keep it. I get that its not a HUGE sample but it still doesnt show it to be close either. I really actually dont think its the norm....JMHO... I think it would be wonderful for 50/50's to be given back but I dont think its the idea of the game. I really dont. Especially when I run mine.

We go to a lot of charity events - and it's the norm to give the money back (I did not know this though until I met DH).

The sample used here is way skewed as most of the people who post here don't work for a nonprofit organization.
Before I got into this industry I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you that keeping the prize makes complete and total sense. But, now that I actually work for one, I can say with much certainty that taking the prize and giving nothing back, if not all of it, is NOT the norm.
Look through the responses on this thread...Those who answered that it's the norm, actually have experience with attending charity events and dealing with the nonprofit world.
Those who answered nay, don't.
That's not a coincidence.
The world of nonprofit is very different than the superbowl pool at some bar.
Nonprofits SURVIVE off the events they hold. They DEPEND on people to partake in these events AND the 50/50s and sweeps that are done at these events. The sole purpose of ANY event held by a nonprofit, is to bring in revenue. That's it. Nothing more. As I said in a prior post, it's the only way we can survive.
