Death of a Pet
I came home from Target today and went to sit down to feed teh baby and one of our Cats was laying on the couch in an Odd position, I yelled its name and it didnt move. Jokingly I said to My Mother in Law " IS that Cat dead?".
Well....HE was
What happened was I was going " Sonny, Sonny " ( cats name) ...and so Noah came runnign over, jumped on the couch and said " Me see...Me see The Cat!" and was trying to touch him.
I quickly brought him to our in laws upstairs and determined the cat was indeed gone, and my MIL helped me fromt here.
Later when DH came home, he went to the spot and was cleaning the couch and Noah said "Cat?"...DH said what happened ( just wondering his response) and he said " he died".
He has NO clue what this means and I said, No the cat went to play outside.
The cat is not really a huge part of our life, we have 2 and a dog, so Noah doesnt pay too much attention to him, but I am just wondering how to explain this if he asks?
I DO NOT want to say he got "sick" b/c me and my Mom tend to get sick a lot and the babies too and with his anxiety issues , do not want him to ever associate getting sick with leaving kwim?
Also...we have NO CLUE what happened to the cat ...HE wasnt sick, there was no signs, he was only 8 yrs old. We do not have the money right now to pay to have an autopsy done. He does not go outsid e( unless he excaped to the porch and I shooed him back inside). ...
Would you be worried there was an illness or anything the kids could "Catch"???????
TIA!

Re: Death of a Pet
I think honesty at this age is better "He died" is better than "outside" cause I remember always waiting for my animals to come back and feeling hurt and sad when they didnt.. wondering if it was something I did, then when I found out they were dead it hurt more because I blamed myself for anytime I wasn't wondering when they'd come back from 'outside'.
Recently I was telling my Dad how mad I was that my cat Bandit went to the neighbor when I was younger. He finally (im 34) said "he died, we just didnt tell you, sorry" Ugh!
As far as illness .. I don't think I'd be worried. Mostly if you cleaned up after him and no bodily fluids were passed on, I think its fine. I'd prolly go nuts cleaning though.
on your loss...

Re: Death of a Pet
i have no experience with this, BUT when when DD#1 has asked "what does die mean?", I have responded with "when the body stops working"...i read/heard that somewhere/from someone and thought it was a good answer for her age...
i personally dislike euphemisms and attempt to "tell it like it is" in the most age appropriate manner. it's getting harder though ...
sorry for your loss!

Sorry I meant went color....
My girlfriend had a cat. An orange tabby. He died suddenly at a young age. The vet told her that orange tabbies are prone to seizures.
We had an orange tabby too. Although he died of old age he did appear to have some sort of seizure issue. But this is looking back on some things he used to do...we didnt realize it at the time.

Re: Death of a Pet
If he is saying "he died", I would not be correcting him or telling him the cat was outside. I think he is old enough just to say "the cat was very old and died" and leave it at that
I have had a similar conversation with miki when she saw a statue that my mom had for her dead cat. Miki asked what happened and my mom said he died

I replied on Pets but I'll paste my response here too- just in case you don't go back over there...
Aw I'm sorry. My cat died suddenly too. What the vet told us is that cats are used to hiding their illnesses- because in the wild illness makes them easy prey. So the cat could have been sick for a while and just never showed any signs. Cancer is very common in cats and sometimes by the time they show any symptoms they are 2 steps away from death.
I wouldn't worry about anything that could harm you or the kids- especially if he never went outside.
It's just a horrible thing when it's so sudden and unexpected!

Re: Death of a Pet
I believe there are some diseases/illnesses that cats can spread to other animals or people - I would get an autopsy

ITA with this post! I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as the cat's sickness affecting people. I had a cat that we got sick this year. She was 12, strictly indoors, acting fine and then all of a sudden one day, she stopped reacting to us and wasn't eating a lot. My brother and I took her to the vet and when they took bloodwork, her numbers were off the chart (in a bad way) and her kidneys were not funtioning. She went downhill so fast and we had to put her to sleep 24 hours later. I'm so sorry for your loss, a pet is a sad thing to lose.

Re: Death of a Pet
we just went through this with our beloved dog Bailey. DD is 4.5 and DS is almost 3.
Bailey had been sick, so they knew that. But when we came home from the vet we had to tell DD that Bailey was not coming home....the Dr said she was too sick to come home is what we told her.
Then as she started asking when she was coming home, we told her that no, she was not coming home, that she was in Heaven with G-d. We told her G-d took away her pain and she was no longer sick with G-d.
She'll still cry once in awhile when she's overtired and say she misses Bailey a lot which breaks my heart.
We had a cat that just kind of laid down and died...he had an enlarged heart.

Re: Death of a Pet
i'd say something like he went to go play on the farm bc he has more room there or wanted to see ht cows. something fun but he's not coming back bc he likes it.
maybe the cat swallowed something and choked.
