Need advice explaining death of a pet to a 4/12 year old...
Its not our cat but it is my sister's and the only pet in the close family. Plus my DD ADORES this cat. He is 15 years old and sick and will be put to sleep soon depending on if he looks to be in pain. Hopefully the cat can hang on till Christmas so she can see him.
But here is the problem I am having. DD knows that MY Mom is in Heaven....but she has NO clue what that really means. So now I feel like when I tell her that the cat went to heaven she will truly get that Mom's die and I feel like that is a lot for a 4 1/2 year old to take in. (she is super smart so I am sure she will put it together)
She will surely ask alot of questions if the cat is no longer around.....Advice???

Just be honest We lost 4 close family members this past year and we told my DD who isn't even 3 yet the truth. I think she understands in her own way. It is the saddest thing in the world though to hear her explain that she can't go see her Mimi, or GiGi anymore since they are in heaven

I have no advice bc I will be in the same situation in a few years when my dog passes...DS will be old enough to sort of understand but it'll be so hard on him...he is so attached to my dog as it is...

I agree, be honest. When we try to overly protect them from life's basic functions we end up confusing them more.
We hurt more for our loved ones because we have memories and experiences. Children are just so honest, frank and live very much in the here and now. They process things with an entirely different set of values and emotions.
I had to go through this with my twin brothers and sister.
I think its going to be harder on you, than her.
