6-21: UPDATE: Cancer diagnosis: I need prayers
I am a long time active poster here on LIF, but I am not yet ready to reveal myself....I can barely wrap my head around this.
Two days ago I was diagnosed with a hair follicle tumor that has cells of an very advanced (morphia basal cell carcinoma (not a normal basal cell, but a deadly one, and it has invaded around my nerve).
What is so scary is that I have had this on my cheek for 25 years, and when biospied as a child, it was nothing. Over the next 25 years, dermatologists didn't think anything of it....it began changing with my two pregnancies, and I spoke to a dermatologist and plastic surgeon..both didn't think it was anything.
I recently found another dermatologist and plastic surgeon in the same office, and went there to have them cosmetically remove this "nothing". After two biopsies, I am faced with a possible cancer. I am having the MOHS surgery in two weeks...and the nurse said that the MD will at the time of the surgery let me know if I need radiation.
The MD is currently in Portugal and doesn't get back in the office for two weeks...her nurse began to choke up on the phone with me, then she shook it off and tried to be positive. Not a good sign.
All I keep thinking is that I want to see my babies grow up (I have an infant and toddler).
Please send me all your prayers, I need them
UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Sloan, and they cannot get me in any earlier....the receptionist said this is not something they deal with often (this form of basal cell) The news has got to get better.
6-21- Update: Yesterday I spoke with a top MOHS surgeon/faculty member from NYU...she was going to see me yesterday, but because my slides were at Sloan, she wouldn't be able to see me, and she is going away next week. She said the specific MD that I am seeing (Nehal) is in the top of the field, and actually this NYU surgeon trained Nehal; she said she sends her own family to her as well. I have my appointment with Nehal at Sloan on the 30th for a consult, and their pathologist (who the NYU surgeon told me is brilliant) will be reading my slides. My DH and I now feel much more comfortable with Sloan.
I told me NYU surgeon my concern about them not seeing my diagnosis, and she said the receptionist may not be the most intelligent person in the world...but yes, it is a rare diagnosis, but they still have seen it.
The scary thing of the day....a covering dermatologist at my derms office told me to not wait a month to get the surgery, get it asap! Great....you mean I'm going to die if I wait a month. She then corrected herself and said just don't wait too long, don't put it off. She was very pro-second opinions, and said that all these MDs are in the top of their fields and they know what they are doing.
Once again, she said she's concerned about the extent of the nerve involvement.
Plus side: the expert from NYU told me to calm down and said, "You are not going to die!" "This is still basal cell, and yes, it is a rare form, and all that means is that it is a larger tumor under the surface than what you see". THen she did admit that some people die, but it's rare (like I said before, I am worried that I'm in that rare case because it's been on me for decades)
She made me feel better, but I feel like I'm getting mixed messages from all over the place.
Hopefully, SLoan will be the answer, and they will get me in for surgery asap!

Re: Cancer diagnosis: I need prayers
Don't think that this is the end..you need to convince yourself that you can beat this. It's important.
As far as the nurse goes..who knows why she sounded that way. Our minds play tricks on us. we hear things.
There is nothing you can do right now but wait. If you can't wait, then go see another doctor. Frankly, if it was sooooo bad, this doctors office should have referred you to someone else stat! So there's something to think about.
Please keep us posted. Praying for you!

Re: Cancer diagnosis: I need prayers
O my gosh how incredibly frightening that must have been for you That's awful that the MD is away for 2 weeks, would you want to get a second opinion from a different doctor in the meantime?? Lots of prayers for you!!!

Re: Cancer diagnosis: I need prayers
Thank you ladies.
Within the past year my MIL has died of cancer; my FIL has died of cancer...and two weeks ago my BIL was diagnosed with cancer. I just can't believe this.

I sent my biopsy to Sloan Kettering, and am trying to get an appointment with them...I will probably hear from them in a day.
