6 months old and still not sleeping
Ethan is 6 months today. He got sick in the beginning of January and ever since has been sleeping so poorly. He goes to sleep fine but he does not stay asleep. Tuesday night he went to bed around 7 and woke up around 10. We decided to try CIO and he cried for close to 2 hours. At first we tried progressive and went in every few minutes but after an hour of that we decided to not go in at all. About 45 minutes later he fell asleep. But he only stayed asleep for about 2 hours. When he woke up at 2 I brought him back to my bed and he slept on me until 4. At 4 my DH brought him downstairs and gave him a bottle. We didnt do it again last night because we had plans and my mom was putting him to sleep. I dont know what to do. Do I try CIO again and see if he goes to sleep sooner if I dont go in at all? He likes to sleep on his stomach but his problem is that he rolls from his stomach to his back but doesnt know how to go the other way so I think that makes him upset as well.

I feel for you Erica.
My only suggestion is that if you are going to do a form of CIO, you have to be consistent with it throughout the night and for at least a week.

I agree. It's the consistency that gets it done. I know that after a DC gets sick it's common to have to "retrain" sleep.

I agree. And no putting him in bed with you. He'll quickly learn that all he has to do is wake up a few times and cry before you resort to bringing him in your bed.
If you're going to do CIO, then you have to do it every night, every time and so forth. You can't do it one night and not the next.

Re: 6 months old and still not sleeping
Consistency is definitely key!
We did CIO with Ryan. (not the progressive form). Within 3 nights he wasn't crying when we put him in the crib. And was not waking in the middle of the night.
Bedtime routine is also really important. Ours is dinner, bath, lotion, pjs, say good night to the light, say good night to the sounds (sound machine) nurse, crib. EVERY night!
4 weeks later I'd say he only cries on average once a week and it is for about a minute.

I know the consistency is important - that is a bone of contention with DH and I. But thanks to you all I am motivated to try it again tonight! Thanks

Re: 6 months old and still not sleeping
my experience is that they need to fall asleep on their own. I am not sure if you are putting him down asleep or awake. If you are putting him down asleep he must learn to put himself to sleep fromt he beginning of the night. This way if he wakes in the middle of the night, he will put himself back to sleep.
I also read the book by the Dr who "invented" CIO. Excellent book I highly recommend it.
