When we have our child I would like to have 2 godmothers, but the church that I used to go to won't allow it. Do you know of any churches that do allow it? Thanks so much! Chat Icon

no, i asked and was told that no Roman Catholic church will officially allow 2 Godmothers. It has to be one of each (male/female), the other Godmother can be a "spiritual witness", but our parish would not allow them up on the altar.

at our church (Roman Catholic) we were told that you can have as many as you want but one 1 godmother and 1 godfather will be truly reflected on the certificate of baptism.

you can have three of each if you want and all of them can participate in the ceremony but only 2 will sign the certificate.

What kind of Christian are you? I was raised Roman Catholic & like the pp's mentioned I was told that only 1 "official" godparent of each gender is allowed. However, my DH is Episcopalian & we baptized our son in his church. We were asked to have at least 1 godparent of each gender, but were told that we could have as many official godparents as we want. DS has 2 godfathers & 1 godmother.

I'm Roman catholic.. so far I've been told that I can have 1 official godmother and 1 official godfather and the 2nd godmother wouldn't go on the certificate. I was told that the godparents don't actually see the certificate and it's just filled out by the church and mailed to me. Is that true?

Thank you!!! One other question.. did the godparents have to actually see and sign the certificate? I just don't want to hurt anyones feelings by having them not sign.. you know?

Thanks again! Chat Icon

you know what, now that i think about it, they did NOT. i remember our Deacon telling us "they dont sign it so they wouldnt know who is the "real" godparent and who isnt" Chat Icon
