Circumsizing - not as popular?
I was talking to my friend who is due to have her son any day now and she is very torn on whether or not to circumsize her baby. I told her I think she should but from this we got into a debate. And apparently from her reading up about everything she has found that 1 the proceedure is very painful for the baby, 2 that most people do it because of tradition or just bc thats what their parents did and 3 that now a days its becoming more common. So now Im wondering how common is it to leave your son un-circumsized? Is she right that more people are not following this proceedure anymore?

We did circumcise because DH wanted it done, and we didn't see any medical reason not to. I think that if there were more studies done about the benefits to not circumcising, we would have reconsidered, but we are happy with our decision.

we didn't.
sadly I didn't realize that this might stop my son from getting as much hs asssss as he may hope...but that's ok. i am sure someone will take his winky on eventually.

She's correct, the % of parents choosing to do it had dropped dramatically over the past 30 years.
I'm sure google would lead you to exact percentages.

I left the decision up to DH to make.
There was no hesitation on his part to go ahead with it. When I asked him why not to do it - his reasoning was the teasing when he gets older. 
I have no experience having a penis, so I didn't argue his reasoning for going through with it.

Not. With the trend heading towards not having it done, we hope to avoid the teasing of having it done.
Plus, we could find zero medical reasons to do it, so for us, it's purely elective surgery.

We did. It was never up for a debate; DH said we're doing it--we did it. As far as the whole teasing thing...DH said he's never looked at another man's penis in a locker room/bathroom or whatever in his whole life--then again, he's no athlete. 
My first boyfriend was not and I didn't even realize it until he told me. Naive much?  Needless to say, no issues.
Lastly, if I were faced with one of "those" today...I'd probably think it was very exotic and European. Ooh la la!
This is one of those things where I think you need to do what you want to do and not worry about what everyone else thinks about it...

Thanks everyone for your input! Its nice to read up on real peoples experiences and decisions on their children rather than reading statistics. I told her she seemed like she was leaning towards not snipping but i think the fact that most people are still for it, is causing her to be torn. I told her go for whats he wants. I agree with another poster only reason Id prob do it is because of teasing down the road when it comes to hs and girls.

we did, and i was with DS2 for his. Honestly? He cried more for the heel stick in the nursery than he did for the circ. He was numbed twice with the cream - once about 90 minutes before procedure, once 30 minutes before procedure. He never even flinched during diaper changes afterwards.

We did with both boys. We're also Jewish so we had a Bris and they were circumcised by a mohel. I did research anyway and 8 days after birth is the best time to do it. Plus, mohels know what they're doing since that's all what they do and no issues at all. Both boys only cried when they were naked. It was quick and DS2 stopped crying shorty after and had a bottle.
I think if it's not for religious purpose then it's a personal decision.

No, I was just flipping around one of the typical arguments for *doing* a circ. I've never seen or heard of it happening, no matter what a guy looks like, and if anyone did comment, everyone else would make fun of the commenter for looking in the first place.

We did w/ DS and will with this one in Oct. I felt DH was the appropriate person to make that decision and he opted for it without question.

Rates dropped from 56% in 2006 to 32.5% in 2009.
So most people these days are opting not to.
Not sure if its because of beliefs or because insurance doesn't pay for it.
My son is intact as is his father. For us it just came to seeing no need to put him through that.

We didn't:
DH is not (as well as quite a few people I knew growing up).
We didn't see a medical need for it & DH believes that it is a very innervated sensitive area that would decrease sexual pleasure if removed.
I couldn't argue with that :)

We did, I left it up to DH and he wanted it done, so we got it done. There were no issues with it at all for DS.

A lot of insurance companies don't pay because it is a cosmetic procedure.
Humana, Cigna and BCBC are three firms that come to mind for not having blanket coverage of it. Also I believe Medicaid doesn't cover it.
My OB makes everyone sign paperwork stating they understand many ins co no longer cover it and that you agree to be responsible for the several hundred dollar fee.
