6m and Older.. Car Seat position in vehicle

Where is your baby?

Just wondering..

Mine is in the middle.. it started that way with the travel system car seat and has stayed that way with the convertible.

I have this insane fear of putting her on either side.. What happens if its a minor fender bender on HER side!!! Chat Icon I'd never forgive myself.

I know nervous nellie Chat Icon

Re: 6m and Older.. Car Seat position in vehicle

Not all cars can have a carseat in the middle. If the car is not designed for it, the next best place is behind the passenger side which is what we did for DS.

ETA: I am also short so there was no way I could carry DS (in the bigger size!!!) at arm length to put him in his carseat.

Re: 6m and Older.. Car Seat position in vehicle

I thought the middle was safest, but was later told behind the passenger seat is so we moved it. Once there will be 2 back there, the older child will go behind the driver seat and the younger will be rear facing behind the passenger. That's what I was told anyway.

Re: 6m and Older.. Car Seat position in vehicle

My older DD is behind the driver and my infant is behind the passenger...I liked having her behind the passenger before the new baby because I could get her out on a busy road without being in traffic.

There's two main reasons. Statistically, there are less side-impact accidents on the passenger side.

If you park on the side of the road (street-side parking, disabled car, on the street at a friend's house, etc), you have the door open and DC and you exposed to the side of the road, and not sitting in the middle of traffic.

DD is behind the passenger side because our car doesn't have the LATCH system in the middle seat.

In the middle of my DH's car.

Behind the passenger seat in my car, I don't have a middle seat in my car.

As an ex claims gal.. and a nervous nelly.. stats of less side impact on the passanger side leaves me very little confidence. ONE accident if its the ONLY ONE in 100,000 is horrible if its with MY baby! Chat Icon

The second makes sense because if I had to choose I'd go to the passanger side so i could hand her a paci or use the mirror thingy to see her easily. haha

ETA: to me.. NO ONE hits the literal center of the vehicle as often. If I tore off my roof and looked down, she's practically dead centered. I do honestly wonder about the exposure to the windshield (front) but isnt that why I check her car seat? I was wondering if there was another reason why middle was less safe than sides....

Re: 6m and Older.. Car Seat position in vehicle

lots of can'ts for center of truck..

May I ask why?

I have an 01 tribute and it worked fine.. Hubby put the center belt strap on it (I wasn't part of the install, so i dont know the particulars) and its pretty darned snug..

What am I missing here?

PS: I drive an 01 tribute

It is a question of it depends on the car. I have a honda CRV and honda and the safety installer both say that in MY car the seat needs to go on the side behind the passenger rather than in the middle. It depends on the car as to whether the middle or the side is best.

Our center seat does not have latch. So when he was rearfacing behind the passenger. The seat would not fit correctly forward facing so it is in the middle with the seat belt. I would prefer the latch.

The first choice is to place in the middle. But to be hones more than 50% of the cars on the road cannot safely have a seat in the middle depending on the seat and teh car combination.

The number one location of crashes in vehicles is the Passenger front. Followed by the driver rear, the driver and lastly the passenger rear.

That is why if the middle is not available, the passsenger rear is recommended.

It's still accurate. The rear passenger has statistically less intrusions than the the rear drivers side, so that we both agree on. It is also 100% true that if you park on the side of the road, and your DC is on the passenger side, you are do not have your door open into oncoming traffic. There are numerous cases of cars clipping doors on the side of the road.

While it may not be advertised by any car seat safety organization, it's still true, and I would consider it a fairly good secondary reason for keeping DC on the passenger side.
