6th grade ela teachers in NYc.. a few questions
I may be switching to Ela from Math. The only thing is the tecaherI i am switching witht is telling me its not very concrete what you are doing each day. They follow the teachers college workshop model. The way it was explained to me was that you have a genral topic to cover but not exact work to do. With math if you are doing fractions its found on page 45, its not like that. I am nervous about not having a concrete guide to go by. Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?

Sorry, i can't really give you the info you need, but I can commiserate. I don't teach in nyc, but I teach 6th grade ELA and science. ELA isn't linear like math and I always feel like I'm just pulling random stuff out of the air...even after 15 yrs of teaching. I'm sure there's a guide with topics that you have to cover, like grammar (nouns, quotation marks, etc), reading (strategies, plot, author's purpose), writing (intros and conclusions, etc).
I don't know what the teachers college workshop model is. Maybe I should look into it?? lol

When I taught using the workshop model, that was exactly it. There was no formal teachers guide. We had photocopies of packets with a few pages of the 'script' which was so stupid that we just took the idea and made it our own. You had a concept but you were on your own with materials. There was also no mention of grammar or spelling so I incorporated those things on my own.
What we did have was a topic for the month, then about 12 subtopics to teach. So I created a calendar and filled it in with those subtopics. Each day had its own s/t. And then I filled in where there were blanks using things that I was inspired to do, felt my class NEEDED to learn or were spinoffs to what the unit was about. I also did spelling every Monday and Grammar every Friday since TC never stressed those and I felt they were important.
