Is this normal in city schools or just the charter school I interviewed in today?

Does this mean you have the students for all those hours? If so, those hours are crazy! That's what Bloomberg and Klein would want our hours to be in the PS. No freaking way!
I have the kids from 8--2:15, then Extended Day from 2:15--3:00.

NO WAY is that normal.
We start at 8am and M-TH goes until 2:57 w/extended day. Friday is 2:12.

Yes, I would have the kids that entire time. Except for Wed would be professional development 4-5.
The pay is the DOE salary scale + 10%.
Plus 2 saturdays a month 9-12.
I want a teaching job....however I don't think I want a job that bad!

Sounds like a charter school schedule. We have a charter school within our school. I think they start at 8 and go til 5. School year also starts before us and may end after us. Our day starts at 8 and goes until 3.

Yeah they actually already started last week. They start 10 days early and then they follow the DOE schedule.

i cant believe those are the hours ...Not only would i hate that as a teacher but it doesnt seem fair to the kids!!!! I work 8:10-3:07 and by the end of the day we are all done

that's an insane crazy schedule! and you have to give up 2 Saturdays each month?!?!?
and if you leave at 5, I would assume you are looking at a 1 1/2 - 2 hr commute home!

Thanks for making me feel better! I didn't get a phone call today so I am assuming I didn't get the job...but I was trying to think about whether or not I would accept it. I'm actually glad they didn't call!

Completely absurd in my opinion.
I hope they have a lot of physical and social activity built in at the end of the day otherwise classroom management would be a nightmare.

Trust me...as someone who works in an elementary school that starts at 7 and goes until 2...you do NOT want that job. Like, ever.
Having kids that early is torturous...and to have them until 5 would be simply endless.

That's a charter school for you. They can make you work whatever hours they want. 7-5 is NOT a normal amount of teaching time in NYC. We start at 8:18 and end at 3:07.

I honestly can not imagine having my students that long. My day is 7:38-2:29 with the kids and contractually the teachers stay until 3.
My DH works in a different field and his hours are 7-4 with an hour lunch break. I hope with that schedule you at least get longer than 40 minutes for lunch.

Definitely not!!! Last our extended day was built into the regular day so I went from 8:10 - 3:00.
This year we have extanded day after school so I will go from 8:10 - 2:30 with extended day 2:30 - 3:07 M-Th. Each school will have different start/end times but the length of the day should be the same

I can see wanting to keep the kids in school later (to stay out of trouble), but why 7? Kids need sleep! (of all ages!)
When I worked in the city, we had a split schedule (11 periods - Jrs and srs went in the moringin and fresh/soph in the afternoon) and I worked from 9:45 - 4 a few semesters - it was nice to wake up late!

i just accepted a position for a dept of ed funded (but still "private") spec ed school the hours are 730-430...

We're under the assumption that for PD days, without kids, we only work a 6 and 20 day, not until what would be the end of Ext Day. On PD days, we always leave by what would be the end of a regular work day, for us being 2:20 pm. My admin has never demanded that we stay until 3:00.

When we have PD days or clerical half days my principal always makes a point of reminding us that it's a 3:10 day (our extended day time) but since he usually lets us go before that no one's ever actually checked with the contract. But my chapter leader is pretty good and she's never said anything, so I assume that my principal is correct.
