Re: 2012 Yearly Goal! Post What You Have Read

I'm not going to give myself a goal, but I'm going to try to read as much as possible. I set my goal tentatively for 50 on Goodreads, but in all liklihood, I'll pass that goal.

January 2012

1. Loved (Vampire Journals #2) by Morgan Rice- Just okay.
2. Betrayed (Vampire Journals #3) by Morgan Rice- Average.
3. A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice & Fire #2)by George R.R. Martin- Not as exciting as the first book, but taking interesting turns.

February 2012

4. My Blood Approves by Amanda Hocking- I liked this book better than the Trylle series by Amanda Hocking.
5. Fate by Amanda Hocking- Enjoyed it.
6. Flutter by Amanda Hocking- Pretty good.
7. Hush Money by Susan Bischoff- Really enjoyed this book, reminds me of X-Men. It's the first in a series.
8. Hollowland by Amanda Hocking- My first zombie read and I loved it. I read this in about 12 hours.

March 2012

9. Eragon by Christopher Paolini- Slow to start and a little boring, but it got much better towards the end. I think I've just been spoiled by books like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.
10. Storm Born by Richelle Mead- I like the premise of the book, but damn, can't a storm queen walk down the street without being molested?! I wish they didn't focus on that so much, because I liked the story.
11. Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison- I picked this book up because I liked one of Kim Harrison's paranormal shorts. This book was just okay. I'm trying not to judge it too harshly. Sometimes I find the first book in a series to be boring and kind of drawn out since there usually is a lot of background info to slog through. This book went in the other direction and kind of threw you into this alternate reality without explaining anything and just assuming you'd know. I checked several times to make sure this was the first book in the series. Once I got the lingo and lore down, it got much better though.

April 2012

12. Witches of East End by Melissa De La Cruz- It was just okay. Considering how much I hated her other series, Blue Bloods, though, that's a rave review.
13. A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron- Extremely emotional and heart warming story. The book was just about one big cry, but in a good way.
14. Hunting Kat by Kelley Armstrong- I love Kelley Armstrong's "Otherworld" series so I was excited to see she has a few short stories out. I didn't realize HOW short. But it was a good, quick read. I enjoyed it.
15. Serial by Jack Kilborn and Blake Crouch- a short horror story that was just... horrific. It was too much for me and I didn't enjoy it.

May 2012

16. A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice & Fire #3) by George R.R. Martin- Definitely the best in the series. It seems like karma finally found a lot of the characters in this series, much to my delight! After nearly 4,000 pages of this series, the story still keeps me on my toes and has gone in directions I never could've imagined!
17. Let's Pretend this Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) by Jenny Lawson (The Bloggess)- I was a bloggess virgin until very recently. And in a few short weeks, I'm entirely and utterly obsessed.
18. Sick (Project Eden #1) by Brett Battles: A great, quick read.
19. Hollowmen (Hollowlands #2) by Amanda Hocking: I was not impressed with the first half of this book at all. That being said, it did improve, but it's not nearly as good as the first installment was.

June 2012

20. Such a Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster- Didn't enjoy this read as much as some of her other stuff. I think it was just slow to start. Once she started losing the weight, the book picked up though.
21. The Dig by Michael Siemsen- I'm not usually into sci-fi so much, but I definitely became invested in the stroy- particularly the past timeline. A well paced read though the end did feel a little rushed.
22. Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James- Overhyped and oversexed, IMO. Despite that, I found myself intrigued by Christian Grey's back story only to be disappointed that this book reveals little to nothing about him. I guess it's a good ploy to get you to read the next two books.

July 2012

23. The Golden Lily (Bloodlines #2) by Richelle Mead- Not a huge fan of this book. I enjoyed it simply because I enjoy the author's writing and am pretty invested in the characters themselves. Otherwise, it seemed like she wrote this book just for the sake of writing it. There was very little moving the plot along in the first half of the book. It was definitely a far cry from the fast paced VA series that kept me on the edge of my seat.
24. Dark Lover (BDB #1) by J.R. Ward- Okay, it's a little cheesy. But I feel like that's par for the course for most paranormal stories, particularly romance. I still loved it. I enjoyed the characters, the stories, and yes, the sex.
25. Lover Eternal (BDB #2) by J.R. Ward- I didn't like this one as much as the first book. The characters just didn't thrill me. That being said, the book went on to get better towards the end. I'm very excited to read the next story!

August 2012

26. Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips- It was a cute read. I really liked the personalities and the Earthly jobs that each God performed. The two main characters were so boring and prim and proper though that it annoyed me. I think they could've done way more with this premise.

Currently reading The Awakening (The Watchers Trilogy) by Karice Bolton. (So far, extremely cheesetastic.)

Re: 2012 Yearly Goal! Post What You Have Read

My goal last year was 30 and I surpassed it, but I'm expecting #2 this year so I'm guessing I won't have as much time to read (I only read on the train to/from work and will be off for 3 months when I have the baby).

That said, I'll set my goal at 20 books.
(I'm on a Nora Roberts kick since I borrow them for free from the library!)

January
1. Blue Smoke - Nora Roberts
2. Sweet Revenge - Nora Roberts
3. Genuine Lies - Nora Roberts

Re: 2012 Yearly Goal! Post What You Have Read

75 book goal

1. The Angel Makers- good, but kind of disturbing, and I ended up disliking the main character A LOT at the end.
2. Dragonfly in Amber (this was a re-read, so I'm not sure if it counts)- Awesome, but read Outlander first.
3. 11/22/63- Best book I've read in a LONG time. LOVED it!
4. Bury Me Standing- Depressing.
5. The Dovekeepers- Good, but very depressing.
6. Darkfever- I read the whole series in like 4 days. Very good junk food.
7. Bloodfever
8. Faefever
9. Dreamfever
10. Shadowfever
11. On a Highland Shore- Great, especially for those who like Scottish stuff.
12. A Discovery of Witches- Didn't realize this was going to be a series when I picked it up. The next book won't be out until July. I liked it a lot (reminded me of The Historian) but I feel cheated that I have to wait so long for the next book.
13. Clash of Kings
14. Mistress of the Art of Death- I'm not usually a mystery person, but I liked the fact that this was set in the 12th century. It was like a 7 out of 10 for me, but only because I felt like the author could have done more with it.
15. THe Serpent's Tale- sequel to #14. It was ok. I figured out the murderer halfway through.
16. 50 Shades of Grey- Total Xrated smut. Love it Chat Icon
17. The Forever Queen- if you really love English history, you will enjoy it.
18. 50 Shades Darker- not as good as the first one, smut-wise. There was a storyline in this one.
19. Shadowbrook
20. 50 Shades Freed- too much story, not enough smut Chat Icon
21. I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell- made me LOL many times, and feel guilty for doing so.
22. Dark Lover- I don't get the hype surrounding these books. It really wasn't good at all.
23. Lover Eternal- I give up. These books are just terrible.
24. Hunger Games- finally read it and it was REALLY good! I was pleasantly surprised.
25. Catching Fire-good
26. Mockingjay- good
27. Under the Dome- EXCELLENT! I love Stephen King.
28. No One is Here Except All of Us- the concept was really cool, but I didn't care for the writing style. It wasn't bad, just left me feeling creeped out.
29. Hidden Wives- great story, writing was just ok.
30. Lady in the Mist- I didn't know that this was Christian fiction when I picked it up, I thought it was historical fiction. It totally failed at both, in my opinion. Terrible.
31. The Surrendered- so depressing and sad, but so good.
32. Let's Pretend This Never Happened- OMG, funniest book ever!!! Loved it!
33. Christ the Lord:Out of Egypt- very cool take on Christ's early life by Anne Rice.
34. Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana- excellent.
35. The Passage- EXCELLENT
36. The Wolf Gift- Very good.
37. The Wine of Angels (Merrily Watkins series #1)- This series is fantastic... I highly recommend it.
38. Midwinter of the Spirit- (Merrily Watkins #2) also amazing.
39. A Crown of Lights (Merrily Watkins #3)- SO good! I'm loving this series!
40. A Cure for Souls (Merrily Watkins #4)- not my favroite of the series so far, but very good.
41. The Lamp of the Wicked (Merrily Watkins #5) THe weirdest so far.
42. Prayer of the Night Shepherd (Merrily Watkins #6) Very good, but I need a break from the series for a little while. I will pick it up again.
43. Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier- I really enjoyed this little fairy tale! I couldn't help comparing it to the author's Sevenwaters series, and that was MUCH better than this.
44. Cybele's Secret by Juliet Marillier- it was just OK.
45. Wild: From Lost to Found on the pacific Crest Trail- by Cheryl Strayed- I thought it was amazing! Definitely worth the hype.
46. Belinda by Anne Rice- I ended up really enjoying this, but not for the reasons I thought I would. It was NOT really erotic fiction, and I'm not sure why it was listed as that. I was a little creeped out by the main characters in the beginning but ended up liking both of them, especially Jeremy, by the end.
47. Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon- better than I thought it would be! The writing was awful, but the story was interesting and the sex was hot.
48. Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn- AMAZING. I wish I knew someone who read this book so I could talk about it with someone!!!
49. The Rift by Walter Williams- This SHOULD have been a fabulous book but I was so angry with it by the end. It had a great premise, cool characters, really interesting story, but the author just didn't follow through ad it drove me batshit crazy.
50. Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon- currently reading
51. Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness- I thought it was great! I loved reading about their experiences in Elizabethan England, loved all the historic characters, and Matthew and Diana's story is enjoyable.
52. The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain- It was OK. This isn't really my usual kind of read. It was a good story, but I found myself nitpicking the writing, the characters, and the plot al the way through. I'm sure those who enjoy a Jodi Picoult-type of read will totally love this, but it was just Eh for me.
53. The Kingdom of Dreams, by Judith McNaught- I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The history was terrible, but the love story was so great! And te sex scenes were hot! And the writing was great! I enjoyed it.
54. Whitney, My Love, by Judith McNoaught- My feelings were very mixed on this. I definitely didn't love it as much as Kingdom of Dreams.
55. The Light Between Oceans, by ML Stedman- LOVE LOVE LOVE!! So well written, amazing story and characters.
56. THe Sandcastle Girls, by Chris Bohjilian- usually I love his books but this was not my favorite.
57. Tiny Beautiful Things, by Cheryl Strayed- OMG... everyone should read this book.
58. Darkhouse- by Karina Halle- junk food type of read. Reminded me a lot of the Fever series. It was good! I will definitely read the next one.
59. A Cold Day For Murder by Dana Stabenow- It was good but really short! I wanted more book!
60. A Year of Learning Dangerously: Adventures in Homeschooling by Quinn Cummings- fantastic book especially for anyone who has thought about homeschooling.
61. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn- excellent. Liked it even better than Gone Girl.
62. Sharp Objects, by Gillian Flynn- really really disturbing. I will probably have nightmares.
63. The Imprfectionists, by Tom Rachman- I really did not care for this book.
64. The Wilder Life, by Wendy McClure- I loved this!! I am of "the Laura tribe" so I enjoyed the sentiment behind it.
65. Tell the Wolves I'm Home, by Carol Rifka Brunt- This was AMAZING! One of the best books I read so far this year. Highly highly recommend.
66. Bared to You- OMG this was terrible. Really horrifically bad. Why, WHY can't there be intelligent, well written erotica??? WHY???
67. Salem's Lot- somehow missed this book along the way and I really really liked it!
68. Beneath the Shadows, by Sara Foster- it was a good, quick read. Kind of a typical mystery but it did have a kind of gothic feel too it. Also, I will read almost anything set in the English moors.
69. Long Hard Ride by Lorelei James- this was porn... Only read it if you're looking to read cowboy porn.
70. The Yiddish Policeman's Union, by Michael Chabon- hated it.
71. Broken Harbor, by Tana French- im not usually a big mystery reader but this was excellent!! Highly recommend!
72. In the Woods, by Tana French- I liked Broken Harbor better but it was still excellent. I'm on a Tana French kick now!
73. Living With Chickens, by Jay Rossier- We are thinking about getting chickens n the spring Chat Icon
74. Faithful Place, by Tana French- currently reading
75. The Backyard Homestead, by Carleen Madigan- I took ths book out from the library but I'm going to buy it so I can peruse it again and again!
76. The Twelve, by Justin Cronin- AMAZING! Love this series!
77. Dark Angels, by Karleen Koen- Eh. It was ok.
78. Flight Behavior , by Barbara Kingsolver. Excellent. Loved every word of it. The scene towards the end with the man handing out the pamphlets was one of the most perfect scenes I have ever read. Just an incredible read.
79. Age of Miracles - this was incredible. I seriously have chills from this book.
80. Say You're Sorry by Michael Robotham- If you like Gillian Flynn you will LOVE this book... really good and creepy and disturbing.
81. Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff- Excellent. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
82. World War Z, by Max Brooks- it was pretty good. My son raves about it, but for me it was nothing to write home about.
83. Bleed For Me, by Michael Robotham- I am loving this author!!
85. The Gods of Gotham, by Lyndsay Faye- I really enjoyed it!
86. Shatter, by Michael Robotham- currently reading

Re: 2012 Yearly Goal! Post What You Have Read

I didn't set a goal last year. So this year I'm aiming for 24 and hoping to exceed it (although with a 3.5 year old and 9 month old twins it may be difficult).

1. Safe Haven - Nicholas Sparks
2. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer
3. (just started) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
