I have a question for all those who are willing/able to homeschool indefinitely. What do you and your spouse do for a living?
I don't know anyone IRL who has the ability to do this.
I used to be a Spanish teacher before having my little ones. I became a SAHM when we had ds1. We struggled a bit and needed to do some changes to make it work. I’ve been homeschooling both DSs since this past Sep because of the elimination of religious exemptions. I’m thankful my hubby and I can make it work, he’s a plumber and has his own business. We’re planning to move to a state where religious exemptions are still accepted (possibly to SC) and because of the kind of state NY has become but it won’t happen for at least 5 yrs. If we do end up moving, my children will go back to public schools. I must say though, being a SAHM or SAHD is not the only way to make homeschooling work, I know many, many families where both parents work FT and they’re still able to homeschool their children, it’s certainly not easy but it is doable.
Who watches their children while they are at work?
The families that I know either have a family member -a grandparent, an aunt, etc- to watch their kids (sometimes they’re partially in charge of the homeschooling), other times the parents are able to switch their work schedules so the kids can always stay with at least one parent at home, I also know families where 1 parent is able to work PT instead of FT, some are able to work some hrs from home. I also know some parents where they’re able to hire a babysitter for a day while they work (on that day). My mil actually helps a friend by watching her kid 1 and sometimes 2 days a week so she can go to work in the city. I also know families that have multiple children and the older ones stay with the younger ones while the parents work. For those parents that are in charge 100% of their kids’ homeschooling and work FT, they homeschool at the end of the day or during the weekend. One of the good things about homeschooling is that u do not have to teach ur child 6, 7 hrs daily like it happens in school, u’ll most likely cover everything u need to teach him/her in 3 hrs, max 4 cause it’s one to one, there’s no distractions, and u get to cover the material much faster. It takes me about 3 hrs to teach both of my children (4 and 7 yo).
So it sounds like unless you have family to care for your child, you need to hire a full time nanny who also has the ability to teach.
That sounds cost prohibitive for the majority of families and a ridiculous expense even for those who can afford it.
Not necessarily, it depends exclusively on the family’s situation. Flexibility with work, being able to make it work with only 1 income, 1 parent works FT while the other works PT, working from home, etc. Each situation is different. And it doesn’t have to be an expense, some of the homeschooling families I know don’t have the typical NY salary and still decide to homeschool their children. But if NY is still in quarantine by the time the next school yr comes around, I’m sure the school districts will be the ones providing the education like they’ve been doing so I’m sure it’ll be a different situation.

Correlation does not equal causation. That is Epidemiology 101. This would be very irresponsible of the the media and governor to assume the two are linked without solid evidence.
I am so happy someone said this.
That is the line they ALWAYS GIVE after someone is vaccine injured right after getting a vaccine. Always.
And yet now all of a sudden, correlation equals causation? No.
Maybe its related to Covid and maybe its not. We will not know for a very long time, if ever.
It’s the news outlets that’s implying this. They make these scary headlines and then when you read in they say “possibly” linked to Covid

73 NY Children Sick With Rare COVID-Related Inflammatory Illness
This is the email from my pediatrician 3 days ago:
Dear Families,
While sheltering at home, we have become news junkies hanging on every piece of information COVID related. The latest is a potentially scary illness in children. The New York State Department of Health is reporting 15 cases of children hospitalized with signs of shock and something called Kawasaki disease.
What is Kawaski Disease
Kawasaki Disease is a rare childhood illness that pediatricians have known about for years. This illness causes the walls of blood vessels to become inflamed. Symptomatic patients usually have high fevers for at least 5 days, rash, cracked lips, and swollen glands in the neck. If not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, the illness can cause swelling of the coronary arteries and lead to heart problems in children. The good news is with proper treatment this serious complication can be avoided.
The cause of Kawasaki Disease is still unknown. But why are we seeing recent clusters in New York, England, Italy, and France? There is speculation that there may be some relation to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID 19. Only 4 of the 15 patients reported in New York State tested positive for the virus, although 6 of the patients that tested negative, had positive antibody tests. We are not certain about the validity of the antibody test used on these patients.
What is happening in NYS?
The Department of Health in New York has released a statement describing 15 cases of children with shock like symptoms both with and without Kawasaki symptoms. Most of these children showed symptoms that included fever rash, abdominal pains, vomiting and diarrhea. Only about half had respiratory symptoms. The good news here is that although the children are very ill, no child has died.
Every day we learn more about COVID 19. Most children do well with this illness. These new reported symptoms are very rare. While the news is scary, remember these children are very ill and look sick. What should parents do? If your child is feverish, not drinking, or developing a rash, call your Allied pediatrician. We can set up a Telehealth visit and your pediatrician can evaluate your child and answer all your questions.

Re: 73 NY Children Sick With Rare COVID-Related Inflammatory Illness
On Friday, when I got 3 dings on my phone in a very short period of time notifying me of 3 childrens' deaths, I definitely raised an eyebrow.
I just want to preface this by saying I am not into conspiracy theories ever. However...all this time there has been very little coverage or information about kids. Does anyone else find it odd that about the same time people have started to "test the waters" so to speak by stepping out more often (roads are more crowded, people are sneaking off to work, loosening the self-quarantining habits, etc.) they start dropping bombs about children dying? Also the same week people lost their minds with the "reimagining education" comment? I find the timing of all of this a little strange.

Exactly!!
And yes I will send my son to school/camp... he gets croup still which he should’ve out grown. That’s another illness caused by getting a virus. It’s a dry nasty cough that last about 2 weeks for my son after he’s been sick.
We should research this, but this also isn’t proven to be linked to Covid. There were kids who had it that did not have Covid. So we have to further question the link.

I’ll wait to see more info about this, but I saw it in the news last week.
While it sucks to not have schools going, keep in mind they did this in war times. A year or two is not going to really ruin them. I don’t agree with homeschooling. It’s actually illegal here. But for now, it will have to do. But after this is all over, there is no need to home school.

You don’t know any SAHM/SAHD’s?
I know 2 families that homeschool. One family the father in a public school teacher on LI (mom was a teacher before kids). Other family the father works in NYC in finance. Not sure what his wife did before kids?
But I know plenty of families where one parent stays home.

Really? You know nobody who is a SAHM? Or anyone where they work opposite schedules with their spouse? My sil works days, and my bil nights-they actually work at the same place, so she works 730-3, he brings the kids to work, and then he works 330-11 and she takes them home.
I feel like I know so many people in situations like these-or where one spouse works part time and grandparents watch the kids, etc.

My husband and I work opposite shifts but he sleeps during the day while I’m at work. Both sets of parents work so no help from grandparents. Right now I’m working from home but if we are given the OK to go back to work and schools still remain closed I’m not sure what I will do. My son has special needs so I can’t just hire any sitter. I find that Its hard to get by on Long Island and afford a mortgage taxes and other bills, if you don’t have two incomes, or at least one person has to have a very well paying job.

Re: 73 NY Children Sick With Rare COVID-Related Inflammatory Illness
The last article I read from NYT said all the kids were either positive or had antibodies. I understand that’s not definitive but unfortunately we have little definitive data about Covid in general since its new. And honestly, even it’s not, then what? Kids are dying of a new mystery Kawasaki like condition? That not much better.... Ugh and I was just steadying to relax a little.

I think this is actually a rarity and wouldn’t be ideal for most folks. Most families I know have 2 parents working full time days, pay for camp in summer and alternate days off during school breaks. Sure there are some who have the advantage of working part time and having help from parents, but I think most families would have to make some major changes...

Well, it obviously wouldn’t apply to all families, but I’m assuming people who would want to homeschool either have a situation in place where it could work, or would be willing to shift their priorities if they decide they want to homeschool. Everyone else will just eventually send their kids back to school lol

It's pretty clear that this condition is somehow linked to the virus. All of our lives will have to change, unless something game changing hppens, or we choose to put our heads in the sand. There are no other options.
I kniow people looking for work for the first time in a long time. People quitting jobs. People moving. Home schooling. Adapting. Doing what they need to do to take care of their families until the experts get a handle on what we are dealing with and how to stay safe.
We are living through history, and while everyone has to decide what to do for their own families, deciidng that all politicians, scientists, doctors, policy makers, and journalists are in cahoots and conspiring to...do something(???) and remaining in abject denial doesn't seem like the way to go.

I never really said I was anti-homeschooling. I said that it is illegal here. I don’t agree with it because I think that is something that professionals should do. Unless you studied all levels of pedagogy, then you can teach your kids. That doesn’t happen here. You study elementary, high school, etc. I teach teachers and we are somewhat tougher on those that are majoring in teaching high school. Why? Because we have a responsibility to society to not send out a teacher that cannot do the job.
If you are fully qualified, then fine. But that is often not the case. If you want to do it for religious reasons, then send them to the proper school for that. Teaching isn’t a one size fits all job.

They are now saying that ALL the children tested positive for Covid antibodies. I heard this morning that the antibody testing they were using has a low accuracy rate so maybe they did further testing.

I know a few people who have grandparents babysit, but they all work full time. I doubt any of them would have their kids fully educated by grandparents.
The difference here lies in choice. I have no desire to ever homeschool. I would venture to guess most parents don’t want to homeschool. There is a huge difference between choosing to quit your job to homeschool and being forced to quit your job to homeschool.
ETA I certainly wouldn’t quit my job to homeschool and I don’t think most, if not all of the women I know would, either. I don’t know if it’s social or economic but it’s unheard of in my and DH’s circles for someone to stay home. We’d have to hire nannies or tutors.
We’re not the problem. What are the people who can’t afford nannies or tutors supposed to do? Who is going to care for their kids while they work?
Also, the whole “can you make it work on one salary” bit is obnoxious. Not everyone wants to throw their career away. It isn’t always an economic decision to work. It floors me when people don’t understand that.

Exactly. Thank you. People who actually are questioning the link, especially now that all the kids were shown to have the virus or the antibodies, are in major denial and just desperate for life to go back to how it was before all this. I get it, but It won’t and it can’t, because of this f*cking virus itself, not because of a conspiracy to control our lives. It sucks and it’s a bad situation but that’s the nature of this awful virus, not politicians, scientists, the media etc.

Yes, I feel it is very clearly Covid related. A horrifying and previously not considered post-inflammatory immune response that has come out of nowhere. Covid is the gift that keeps on giving.

I’m surprised, that’s all. My dh and I are both highly educated, and I know loads of people who stay at home-with my immediate neighbors, actually, only two mothers work full time m-f jobs. After my last was born, I resigned and won’t return to working for years. Two are nurses and work three days a week, two work part time in schools now that their kids are older (they stayed home until their youngest was in kinder), and one works very few hours part time while her kids are at school (and not daily). So, out of 8 neighbors with kids, only 2 work full time.

Can I ask why you’re so anti-homeschool?
By that argument, what makes you qualified to teach teachers? How many years did you spend teaching elementary, middle, or high school?
I teach EFL. I have my MA. I am qualified by the gov’t standards to make sure that they teach English correctly. If they cannot speak English correctly and make mistakes, then that’s that. That is where my qualification is. I do not need a qualification for teaching elementary, middle school, or high school. They have other classes for that. My job is to make sure their grammar, vocab, and writing are up to par.
If someone makes a bad mistake during an exam and they are studying high school teaching, then it is a fail. Sorry, but that is how it works. We have to follow the Staatsexamen rules.

I have a question for all those who are willing/able to homeschool indefinitely. What do you and your spouse do for a living?
I don't know anyone IRL who has the ability to do this.
No. I don’t know any SAHMs. I don’t know anyone who works opposite schedules, either.
Aren't you and your neighbors lucky
