LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

A 2-year-old girl was left behind at the beach at Heckscher State Park in East Islip by a Bay Shore day care center after a group outing there Tuesday afternoon, police said.
State Park Police said they first became aware of the stranded child at the beach near Field 6 about 3:30 p.m. and began searching for the girl's parents.
No one there claimed the child, police said, so other law enforcement departments and social services authorities were alerted.
About 6:30 p.m., someone from Our Little Darlings Day Care in Bay Shore called park police to ask whether anyone had found a little girl, police said.
The child's mother was then located and reunited with her unharmed daughter Tuesday night, authorities said.
"The cop there told me the mother's so distraught that they're going to drive her home," said State Park Police Capt. Bruce Marx.
Marx said a woman at the beach first notified lifeguards about the child left behind.
"This kid was playing with her kid for about an hour," Marx said. When the woman wanted to leave, he said, "she started wondering, 'Where's this child's mother?' "
Marx said the investigation is continuing and no charges have been filed.
No one could be reached at the day care center for comment.

Holy cow, that is insane. How could they do such a thing-leaving a two year old baby at the beach?! They are sooo lucky she didn't get seriously hurt or worse.

When I taught pre-school in a daycare center we had to count the children constantly throughout the day. There is no excuse for this. That poor mother. I would've gone ballistic if that were my son.

No. You would not be able to hold me back.
I work with High School kids and we do headcounts all the time!!! How do you not count?? And shouldn't there be a very low staff to child ratio??? Even lower on a trip than in a classroom?? No excuse.

I know - I can't imagine taking a group of 2 year olds on a field trip...
I was a camp counselor for 4 year old boys one summer and I was constantly counting them - and we never left the camp.

I think the ratio for 2 year olds is 7:1. Daycares take trips all the time and usually ask for parent volunteers so there are more eyes on them. I wouldn't have a problem with them going to the beach to play (no water) but they should have counted at least 3-4 times before leaving. Once after rounding up the kids, at least once while walking, once after walking to the bus and once again right before leaving after all of the kids were buckled in. There's really no excuse.

Isn't 2 years old a bit young for field trips?
How do they get there- on a bus?
Are there car seats on that bus?
I am sorry but that can't be safe.
My DD is 2 and there is NO WAY I would allow daycare to take her anywhere off site at this age.
NO way.
And as far as this goes, everyone on that trip- EVERYONE needs to be fired.
No excuses.
And that center needs to have it's liscense suspended.
It took them until 6:30 to make a call to the park police?? Really???
Holy shyt this is making me crazy!!!

I'm sorry, but 2 year old should NOT be going on a beach field trip..not OK in my book and most things don't get to me...
The beach is a crazy place. I get nervous at times when its just me with my two boys...
And I dont' understand how she went missing...AWFUL!! I would be livid and she would be ripped out of that place immediately.

That makes the situation even crazier!! Let's say they had 12 kids, they had at least 3 adults with them then. I'm sorry, how do you not realize a kid is gone!!! And it took them HOURS to figure it out ?!?!?!?!? If that was my kid, heads would be rolling!!!

That is horrible!! If my child was in that daycare she would not being ever going back! I hope all parents that have kids there take them out! They should be all fired and closed!! Thank God nothing serious happened! There is absolutley no reason they should have waited till 6:30 to call! Didnt they bother to count everyone on the bus!

Based on the time frame here (calling at 6:30) I assume the daycare didnt even know that the child was missing till the mother came to pickup the child? Forget headcount. HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW A CHILD IS MISSING????
As the mother of a 2 y/o, there are no words to express the level of distress I would be in.

this is nuts. my daycare does not take 2yo on field trips - way too young. and how did they not notice this child missing until 6:30???? forget the fact that they didn't headcount before leaving the beach - the teachers didn't remember the child existed for 3 hours?!?!?!?! it's a 5:1 ratio for 2yo. how does that happen? they should be shut down.

Someone should be arrested/charged for child abandonment, IMO. If a parent did this, they'd be arrested and flamed in the press for being unfit. This daycare was supposedly licensed and was being paid to care for the children -- everyone is lucky the little girl didn't get hurt or God forbid my biggest fear -- abducted.

OMG!!!!!! I am absolutely floored by this!
It took the daycare 3 hours to report the child missing and didn't they even bother doing headcounts. Never mind the fact that they took 2 year olds to the beach, which I find dangerous and an inappropriate place to go on a field trip with little kids. My almost 2 year old is in daycare now and they DO NOT go on field trips because they are too young and can be quite unmanageable.
I would be livid and I would want everyone involved terminated immediately and the daycare license suspended and the daycare investigated.
