Sachem Failed
I am pissed as is so many other people. I wish people would have researched before voting. A little over a $1/day would have saved the school's orchestra's, the marching band, the GATE program, the clubs, the JV sports, the Kindergarten.
Now you will have to pay for private lessons, babysitters for 1/2 day kindergarten if you work full time. Your children will be far behind other districts that have full day K. So that $1/day will turn into who knows how much so it makes absolutely NO sense.

My DD isn't starting kindergarten until September 2014, but DH and I were saying the same thing. My sister's DS is supposed to start in September. Just insane how much the district will lose.

Sachem Failed
Are the cuts definite or just a possibility?
ETA: Please answer only if you know for sure, not if you heard a rumor or speculation.

Sachem Failed
Usually when a budget fails they will reevalute it and put it up for a vote again. Sometimes it's really helpful for people to see the effect a budget has on the students. I have put on mini concerts, art shows, you name it during a re-vote to show this to the community. I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

Re: Sachem Failed
That is terrible. I remember when I was in HS the fear we all had when budget votes came that we would lose our music program and Marching band. Without those I never would have made it through HS and my world would have completely crumbled.
I hope this dosent go through for the sake of the children.
If people don't care about the kids they should at least care about their property value and town reputation. People with children aren't going to want to move to a subpar school district. I would definitely not move to a school without a music program or sports if my child was a musician or athlete.

They have until June 5 to come up with a new budget, and then there will be another vote on June 18. I don't know if they will be sticking to the the 3.14% contingency budget already proposed, or if they will be coming up with a new budget with different cuts. This flyer shows the originally proposed contingency budget (right hand column)

Yes and I wish more people who have researched, done their homework and been informed of what they were voting no for. Taxes will STILL go up and they are losing programs for $5/week, that is all.

Re: Sachem Failed
I'm extremely upset by this. My son will be starting kindergarten in Sept'14, BUT if they can do it with 1/2 day, I don't see full day coming back.
Plus, the sale of waverly fields...the sachem soccer program..
The GATE program (not bragging but couldn't wait for my older son to be part of this)
Extremely sad when in my GUT the money for the cuts could come from other areas.
Personally Sachem owns and operates WAY TOO MUCH property. Unused property. And with enrollment down, they could probably redistrict elementry schools and close one of the buildings, same with middle.
That would help cut the gaps for sure!!

Re: Sachem Failed
I'm moving to Sachem school district next month and wish i could have voted because i'm upset about this. DD will be starting kindergarden in Sept 14, it looks like we will be keeping her in the Catholic school she goes to Nursery school at now. I was looking forward to not paying for private school anymore once she got to go to public school but we are going to have to rethink this. I cant believe the cuts that they are threatening to make, not just the kindergarden thing, but everything. These poor kids

Our budget failed last year. They asked for a ridiculous amount. They revised it, made it under the cap magically (funny how that works) it passed, and we still have K, sports, etc.
It will work out!. They are playing the future K parents like a fiddle. Typical of all districts at budget time.

This exactly. I don't live in Sachem, but people need to see the bigger picture.

I think instead of pooh-poohing the district and bashing everything, you should wait and see. The cuts usually never come. Like BargainMama said, the budget will be revised and they will work it out. That is what happens 99.9% of the time. K is always a bargaining tool, also. The school districts always try to get the most they can into the budget in the hopes that it will pass. Now they need to be accountable and revise it. And I am sure everything will stay intact.

I do not live or work in Sachem so I have no stake in whether or not their budget passes, but I do not think EVERYTHING will remain intact. They need to slash spending by 4% - to have everything remain staus quo is impossible

OK, maybe not everything, but I still think the majority of big ticket budget items will stay.

Exactly! It sounds like nothing is set in stone and everyone is panicking over something that may not even happen.

Exactly. They will revise it and come back for a re-vote. Nobody said full day K is going away. This happens all the time.
