Probably many senior citizens and people without kids in school voted NO because of these "scare tactics." They don't want to see their tax dollars go up even if it is $5 a week.

At the least I know more teachers are going to be laid off, and as a result class sizes are going to be larger.
My bil's gf is a teacher and truly might lose her job now :(

I think instead of pooh-poohing the district and bashing everything, you should wait and see. The cuts usually never come. Like BargainMama said, the budget will be revised and they will work it out. This happens all the time.
It will only be half day. There is a flyer that went around that showed what would happen with each increase of taxes.
My oldest had half day and it was a real pain for working parents. I had to find a sitter, get her on that bus route and have a bill much bigger than $10/week.

Right! Of course it's going to highlight all of these bad things that *could* happen b/c they want it passed. They're not going to say, if you vote no, nothing is really going to happen. Then how else will they get it to pass?

If people vote no, it's because they can not afford these increases. Don't be upset with them, be upset at the school districts and unions for being so wasteful. We are talking about a middle class neighborhood here, how can people just come up with this $$ ?
Taxes in my area are 12k + , I wouldn't blame people for voting down the budget here!

I'm not living anywhere near that area, but I do know it is a middle class area. People move there because the price should be reasonable. Someone posted above the taxes are 10k a year, is that true?

I live in the area. I was unable to vote yesterday but I don't know which way I would have voted if I had. I moved into the area b/c it was nice, the houses were less expensive, and the taxes were low. In the 18 months I've been there, I've already seen a significant increase in my taxes. I know they'll keep going up but at this rate, I might as well have stayed in Nassau.

Ok, as a Sachem resident myself, for all of those that are telling us residents to relax and stop "Bashing" and all that realize that you all probably felt THE EXACT SAME WAY WE ALL DO RIGHT NOW when your districts budgets first didn't pass.
Give us like 24 hours to grasp that this is the first time in a LONG time that the Sachem budget didn't pass. And even if K ends up going to half day/full day/or nothing, its still a realistic concern for many of us who's children could be affected.
We appreciate your insight and understand that they will go back to the drawing board and *hopefully* things will work out right, but when a budget fails in the LARGEST district on LI, it is a huge deal for many of us!!
Sorry, just had to get that out there!!

Nothing was voted in yet. There will be a new budget proposed by June 5, and a vote will take place on June 18.

The area will be less desirable when the taxes shoot up too. So many people move out here from the city or Nassau because of the lower taxes.
I'll be honest. When I was looking at the school district, I wasn't looking at programs. I was looking at test scores, dropout and graduation rates, stuff like that. Maybe I'm in the minority about that but as I'm reading comments on the Patch from outraged parents because cheerleading *may* be cut, their spelling is atrocious (among other things). Perhaps we should be more focused on the education part of school instead of the extracurriculars.

ETA: Cheerleading, drama, dance, etc...those should never be paramount factors in deciding a budget. Those are "extras" that are never a guaranteed right to any student. Extra fundraising can help offset costs if they want those programs to continue. Expecting taxpayers to continue bearing the burden of increasing costs without question is insane. People need a reality check, too.

I do not live in Sachem but I have a ton of friends that do and their children are going to be devastated if they have to cut their electives or clubs/activities next year. It sucks that even though we are talking about Sachem now, it's a wide spread problem and all districts are feeling the crunch whether their budgets passed or not. I was very surprised that Sachem put up a vote over the cap. Last year many districts tried this and only a few succeeded. It's hard enough to get a majority vote and going over the cap you a super majority. Unfortunately, Sachem was dipping into their reserve funds for years in order to not have any significant tax increases but now they do not have the reserves to support that anymore and they are against a brick wall. Hopefully they will build that back up quickly and be able to restore whatever they need to cut.

I think that is an obscene number as well. So it would be an extra $40 a month (if passed). What about next year? Our school budget included a 1.3 million increases solely for pensions. Every year something is cut just for increase of pensions regardless if the budget passes or not. I would not be able to afford a $40 increase on top of my $20 electric increase, $20 gas increase and $300 health care increase...not to mention food or gas. This year my monthly bills have increased dramatically where my income is not. This will continue on here in LI making the desire to live here less and less.

Agreed. The 7% increase already included cuts and only gave the district about .5% increase from last year's budget. Lack of state aid has hurt them tremendously.
I think to act like everything will magically work out is silly. Class sizes have already increased, supply budgets have already gone down. Teachers have already opened the contract. There are only so many cuts that can be made.
The only glimmer of hope I see is that they did get 54% yes votes. Crossing my fingers that the next proposal passes although I"m nervous for DH's job either way.

Yes, this is exactly what I heard from parents in the district. The surplus has been depleted over the years due to overspending and overextending of funds to make up for any increases, but it was bound to run out. You can only spend for so long before it catches up to you. And now it has, and the district is suffering the consequences.
