Re: 8 wks old - shows no interest in toys....
At 8 weeks, no child will really show interest in toys. Nate didn't really show interest in handheld toys until he was 4-5 months old. Even then he was just happy laying in his crib watching the mobile or lights on the FP aquarium.
I think that in the beginning most new moms feel like they need to interact with their newborn all the time. But in actuality too much overstimulation is bad for a baby. I definitely learned that the second time around. Jayden is so easy going, I interact with him, but I also let him be. I put him in the swing, crib, boopy and just let him chill. He's a much better sleeper than Nate ever was and I think it's bc I don't try to keep him 'busy' when he's awake.
No one here is trying to flame you. Us BTDT moms went through what you are currently going through. So keep your questions coming. I swear this whole baby thing is trial and error. I so much more laid back the second time around bc I know what to expect.

see - thats a very compassionate btdt answer! I tell people that I'm the best "mobile" - Cailen will sit in his bouncy and just smile and giggle at me - I also dont think I'm that exciting, but he must see something I dont!

Liza, I think he might be too young still to show interest in toys other than watching them and following movement. He will soon!!!

Yes, they are other ways to play with him. Most of them at the beginning at talking, cooing, playing with them.
Don't worry.... he is a boy!!! He will want toys!

Not worried - just curious! He is such a playful little guy... like I said, I much rather prefer the fact that he plays with us over toys You have seen how alert and interactive he is ( when he's not screaming! )

Re: 8 wks old - shows no interest in toys....
No toys here at 9 weeks.
My DD is very into watching people talk. She is mesmerized and at first grunted and now coos back. I swear she won't have a first word, she'll just delve on into a 5 minute speech one day
My DS is more physical but he was born pretty small so it's only in the last week that he has made tremendous strides in being aware of the world around him. Just this morning he started making a new sound or a new "voice".
As a high school teacher, I do agree that virtually all children today are overstimulated. Babies do need downtime and children need time just to be creative or daydream. Everything around them is so new and they are working so hard to learn and process so much that we take for granted.
It might sound silly but I compare it to the first time I saw St. Peter's in Rome. I'm not religious but I was rendered so speechless by its grandeur that all I could do was stare up at the inside of the dome, my mouth agasp wondering how men built such a structure when they did I had to shush DH twice. I never experienced anything like it. I could not talk, I could not think. It was enough for me to just process its sheer size. Similarly, that's what our DC 's are doing now with everything they see. They have to get used to what they are sensing now before they can move onto toys. They may seem like they are doing nothing but they are very busy on a cellular level.

Beautifully put, Theresa!!! When we go to the park, we will lay under a tree together, and I'll watch him stare up at the branches and leaves - he has such a mesemrized look on his face. Now I understand why people gain new perspective with children. Its wonderful seeing things for the 1st time again!
