9 month-old mommies (or BTDT moms)--what is your DC eating?

I am so totally clueless when it comes to feeding DD these days. She is TOTALLY over the purees and cereals. I know that she wants to go on, but I'm not exactly sure what I should be feeding her.

I know some people just feed their DC whatever they're having, but we eat a lot of spicy food, and I know she's not ready for that.

The other night, we were out and got her some mac & cheese and some green beans. She did pretty well on them. But I need a lot more ideas. We don't see the ped. until Friday, and I feel like I'm the only mom sending their 9 month-old to daycare with oatmeal cereal and fruit purees Chat Icon

Do you food-process the rice, or just give it straight? She's still gagging on stuff that requires more mashing of her gums.

I've been giving her cut-up fruit when she comes home from daycare and she loves that. But when it comes to actual mealtime, I kinda don't know where to start.

I honestly don't remember.

But, why don't you ask DD's daycare teachers? I know that Christopher's gave great ideas (like the EB cereal bars!) for him when he was about 10/11 months oldChat Icon

DS loves eating spiral pasta. I cut it up small and DS can feed himself. For lunch we give him yogurt with some fruit and a piece of string cheese. We give him chicken, beef or turkey for dinner that we puree. It is now a thicker consistency (small but chunky) with some veggies (carrots, corn, green beans, mixed veggies). DS also LOVES avocado. He says yumm as soon as he sees it. We also give him some egg yolk.

Re: 9 month-old mommies (or BTDT moms)--what is your DC eating?

Beth, slow start here with table food/finger food too.

So this is what I do and so far so good. Some of its finger food, some of it she can use her fingers (but make a mess) and some of it I have to feed her, its more for her to get used to consistency and taste.

Pastina with a bit of butter so its not dry
Or Pastina with american cheese melted in (mac and cheese)
Bits of American Cheese
Grilled cheese (tiny bits I rip up for her)
scrambled eggs (yolks only)
banana bits (just a few small bits, she gets constipated)
Gerber puffs
cheerios
smooshed peas (from a can, much softer) and smooshed carrot bits (from the peas and carrots in a can). I tried frozen ones but no matter HOW much I cooked them, they were too hard.
ricotta cheese (likes this)
bits of ripped up pancakes with a touch of butter so they arent dry (she loves these!)
Ditalini pasta with a touch of butter so its not dry, as a finger food (loves this)
Pastina mixed in a squash or pea puree (tastes great)
Puffed rice cereal (very blah, boring)

have tried but she hates
Bits of diced canned peaches

I plan to make mashed potatoes and mini beef meatballs (but both will be new foods to her)
Also plan to try avocado, waffles, french toast. Also plan to try rice cakes one day when I get braver.
I have Gerber yogurt melts here, gonna try those too and Gerber little crunchies, eventually.

I am trying to think of other soft foods. I dont cook alot these days so its hard....I gotta start cooking.

I have YET to hand her anything to chew on, I am too worried, I AM NOT READY to give her big things that she can get a chunk in her mouth. I had given her an arrowroot cookies about 2 mths ago, and she got a hunk in her mouth and would barely let me get back in to get it. So I am not ready for anything like that yet...want to see her mash her food around alot more to feel more comfy with this.

Try Ricotta cheese for texture and it tastes good too. Even mix that with some pureed carrots, DD ate it and it was great practice for consistency.

Re: 9 month-old mommies (or BTDT moms)--what is your DC eating?

we did eggs (ped ok'd them since alot of the meals have them in it as well as table food), pancakes, the mini-pastas, diced veggies, pizza, mini muffins (i found a great carrot/banana/apple recipe), cheese, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, cheerios, chicken nuggets, chop meat browned into meat sauce.... basically anything that we can eat i would make for him... when we went away i would just cut up someof what i ate and he was good... lasted about 2 weeks as i am preg and just couldnt give up my meals because i was STARVING so now he gets his own...

i dont give my dd the foods we eat, i know many people do, but i just dont feel like their bellies are ready to handle all of the garbage we tend to feed ourselves..lol
anyway, i give cut up fruit for breakfast, very soft peaches, bananas, mangoes, melon, etc..with the cereal (shell still eat this)

for lunch, i do frozen organic blueberries, so she can pick them up herself, and they mash easily, with yogurt..or i do peas (same organic frozen) with small pieces of cheddar, or fresh mozzerella (be careful with american, its VERY processed) I break up whole wheat crackers, baked potatoe, sweet potatoe pieces, small shells and organic cheddar melted in..
i dont give rice yet, or pastina..she doesnt like that consistency AT ALL.

I make the rice so it's really soft. She just grabs handfuls and mashes it in.

Gerber Bitter Biscuits

I believe I got them in Walmart a while back. DS didn't like them then, but now he does. I haven't seen them recently though.

When you say be careful with American, you mean like Kraft singles or Velveeta? I know those aren't ideal for a baby due to being processed, but what do you think about Land of Lakes American from a deli? Any thoughts?

Also...is fresh mozzerella ok for a baby due to Listeria risks? I thought babies could not have that.

Careful with these if your kids have dairy allergy-almost all of them have milk in them. I found one at whole foods that doesn't.

Beth-she will gag and choke a bit when you first start her on chunkier textures. That is how they learn to chew first. Coughing is a natural defeinse against choking so don't worry too much about it. Just keep a close eye on it and follow CPR rules-if they are coughing they are moving the food out of teh problem area.

I made DS sweet potatos, peas, squash, rice & chicken..... basically, anything that DH and you eat you can process it and make it a little thicker than her normal puree.

If you eat spicy things, can you cook hers first and then take it out before you add spice for you and DH?
