Are there a lot of agencys on the island?
Is it easier to adopt abroad, or domestically.
TIA Just weighing the options out.

Re: A few questions
How long did you wait after/ if trying to get PG before you adopted? I am not adopting based on fertility issues. I have a bio-daughter and did not TTC #2 but rather chose adoption
Are there a lot of agencys on the island? There are agencies with offices on LI, but not all are based here. That does not change the way you work with them.
Is it easier to adopt abroad, or domestically. Easier? Adoption is a leap of Faith no matter what. Some things are easy, others things are hard. Same as pregnancy IMO. there are different risks with each type of adoption. Domestic: if you want a white newborn you must adopt domestically. there is no other chose. if you are open to other races, and don't "need" a 1 day or a 2 week old then you can consider International. In Domestic adoption the birth parent(s) chose YOU. There are laws in place to protect the rights of the birthmother and those vary by state. I feel domestic can be and often is more $$ than international adoption because of the risks. You need to be open to open adoption IMO..that is the trend now and closed adoption is not as appealing to most birth parents. This does NOT mean your baby goes on birth family visits but you may need to send photos and an update letter 2x a year or met a certain place once a year. Again, it is actually a really beautiful thing and is not as scary as it sounds IMO. the birth parents are not looking to take your baby away..they just want some contact and updates which i understand. But I know people who have had successful and happy domestic adoptions- but often after some delays and failed attempts.
International- you need to look into the countries and see what you and your husband are open to. Not all white parents want or feel they an raise a baby from Africa. That is fine and you need to be honest with yourself in the process. The process for the most part is very steady...the agencies know what you need to do and at the end you will have a baby to bring home. The time frames can change depending on the country and the gov'ts in those countries. Our went from 3-5 months on average (post all paper work done and submitted) and ended up to be 9 months due to the Ethiopia program's popularity worldwide. It happens. Risks inc: you do not have prenatal knowledge and control as you most likely would in a US adoption. An infant in international adoption = a baby under 12 months. Some couples get very young babies but most babies are a few months old at a min. once the process is done.
Ask me anything else. I hope this helps.

Re: A few questions
I don't have any first hand experience but I just want to wish you good luck. That is so exciting
One of my co-workers is in the process of adopting from Guatemala (where there are rumors that it may be closed off to adoptions soon) and the whole process from classes to homestudies paper work took her about a year. She got her referral for the most beautiful baby girl in November and the paperwork won't be ready for her to travel to Guatemala to visit her daughter until around Feb. Then another few weeks-2 months from there for her to go back to Guatemala to pick her up. Good Luck!
