A few questions for anyone whos DC went under anestesia and had surgery
My ds is having surgery on the 21st to remove a dermoid cyst above his eyebrow. He will be 8 months that same day.
My questions are: Can you be with them when they are putting him under or do you basically hand them off when they are ready to start?
Can you be with them as they are waking up?
My last question is how were they afterwards? Were they tired, cranky?
Oh sorry 1 more... For his age do they give any sort of pain medication after or is it basiclally just tylenol
Thank you all for any insight on this process bc i have been making myself sick to my stomach just thinking about it

Re: A few questions for anyone whos DC went under anestesia and had surgery
DS is 20 months and just went in for surgery on Weds for a blocked tear duct. I (they only let one of us) went into the operating room and helped them put him under with a gas. Then I had to leave. It was not good to watch though! He was already up when we got into recovery. The anesthesiologist was holding him! Right after he then slept for 1 1/2 hours - then woke up thirsty and after he drank we were allowed to leave and the rest of the day he was fine - maybe a little more tired then usual. I heard it is best to let them sleep as much as possible b/c it helps them wake up easier. The anestheiologist also gave ds some pain meds in the iv I guess b/c he said the duct was very very blocked. They did say tylenol as needed but we didn't need it!

Re: A few questions for anyone whos DC went under anestesia and had surgery
I was able to carry Jordan and actually lay her on the operating table. I did watch her go to sleep(although I am unsure that was a good thing) as soon as she was in recovery, One parent was allowed in right away and then both after about 30 minutes. She was crying and unhappy but the nurse said it was the way she reacted to the anestesia. She was yelling at me she was 5 years old. She had her surgery at Mather

I think it depends on the hospital. Kaydyn had outpatient surgery at St Charles and I was able to go into the OR with her until they put her out. Then I gave her a kiss and walked out.
Can you be with them as they are waking up?
No she was already mostly awake and screaming when they came to get us. We then sat with her in recovery.
My last question is how were they afterwards? Were they tired, cranky?
I'm not gonna lie...it was really difficult while we were with her in recovery. She was screaming and crying for about 45 mins. When we first went in there she was just waking up and they said she prob didn't know where she was. She was hysterical. She was trying to climb out of the nurse's arms and then tried to climb out of my arms as well when I was holding her. She did not stop crying until we left the hospital about an hour and a half after the surgery. After we left the hospital it was like nothing ever happened to her she was perfectly fine.

They didn't give Kaydyn anything. They said if she seemed like she was in pain (she was only 14 months at the time and not really talking) then give her tylenol.

Thank you all it really did help.
I am not sure if I will be able to go in with him as they are putting him under. I get very emotional Im not sure I can handle it. I might send DH since he is the strong. He is such a mamas boy whuch makes it more difficult. Ugh I wish it was June 22nd and everything was over

My DS had surgery at 6 months---I wasn't allowed back with him, they said at that age its usually tougher on the parents. We were there when he woke up though and I held him. They basically gave tylenol, but honestly, he was fine once he had a little nap after, he really wasn't cranky at all!

Re: A few questions for anyone whos DC went under anestesia and had surgery
DD had tubes put in her ears a few months ago. (she was 3.5 yrs old) They let me stay in the room as they put the mask on her face to go out. Then I had to leave the room. I was brought back in as she was waking up. She was back to her normal self about an hour later. She was crying for a bit when she woke up but everyone seems to say that is very normal. Im really not sure about the pain meds...Im going to guess probabl just tylenol though.
