Re: A funny take on birthdays from someone with Asperger's Syndrome!

ETA - especially the Tony Attwood link - he is the leading expert in Asperger's syndrome and he did something remarkable - he rewrote the entire DSM-IV criteria on Asperger's Syndrome to embrace their strengths! Read it - PLEASE - and compare it to the DSM IV criteria, which I will link if you guys want to see it.
Liza, I found Atwood's strength-based criteria so interesting! I also love the part about re-wording praise in a way that may be more rewarding for a person with Asperger's.
I understand both sides of the "Aspie" conversation. Understanding where the roots come from is important. My gut instinct is to always use person-first language, and never identifying someone by their disability. However, reading the Attwood link, I understand that when "Aspie" is used, it by a group of people who consider their unique personality characteristics a strength and not a disability. Very interesting read - thanks!

Thank you Jackie! I'm so glad you read that - its one of my favorites!
You said it beautifully - and I appreciate that!!! I know you are in the field as well, so you have come across this term for sure, but to be able to identify as something more than a label is important.
Tony Attwood is like a rockstar to me. If I ever met him, I think I would faint! I feel this way about prominent behaviorists as well. I'm a geek. And I embrace that label wholeheartedly - so no one come to my rescue here!!! I am a person first, but a geek second.
Hot babe 3rd.

Re: A funny take on birthdays from someone with Asperger's Syndrome! WITH a added link on the bottom!
I actually googled the word "aspie" and "offensive" to see what came up, and I found a forum on wrongplanet.net (a GREAT site, btw) where it is debated by people on the spectrum - and all sides and perspectives are discussed - its fascinating to see what THEY say - and not what us "NT's" think (neurotypicals )

Yeah, I'm a geek too. I just found the way they worded it so amazing - especially, again, their perception on being PC (which they are SO right about!!!)
