Re: a lil crazy but with all these earthquakes, flooding, birds dying etc...

It could be end times. It could happen next week or next year or in 100 years - or in 100 million years.

But you can't live your life with an expiration date as the focus.. or you aren't really living. Even if you knew for sure that the world would collapse in on itself on March 12th, 2011 .. and you could get hit by a bus on March 11th. And you might have spent your last moments fretting about the next day instead of enjoying what you have today.

The most basic principle to leading an adventurous, exciting and fulfilling life is the knowledge that nothing lasts forever. Permanence doesn't bring joy - moments bring joy.

Live life, enjoy it. Breathe it, revel in every second. 2012? Bring it.

yeah, i don't put much stock in the 2012 theory, or any superstition like that. however, the weather is worrisome, and does seem more extreme and widespread than most of the comparable past occurrences.

I honestly don't give it very much thought. I do my best to live my life to the fullest and try to have wonderful memories and experiences with my family. If the world is going to end, there's nothing I can do to control that. So why waste time worrying.

Nothing going on lately is anywhere near as bad as it's been throughout history, and we're still here. We've survived the Black Plague, Krakatoa, Mt. Vesuvius, the Chernobyl explosion, etc, etc, etc.... what's going on today just SEEMS bad since we're living in it, but compared to history, it's really not much....

Yes i need to hear more stuff like this!!

You also have to factor in the media's involvement in how they sensationalize even the most trivial of natural disasters. We are inundated with specials reports, breaking news, EVERYBODY PANIC--it's raining. I can't wait to see how the local news exaggerates the possibility of a tsunami here on LI just to play on our anxiety.

Obviously this last unfortunate disaster in Japan is monumental and it deserves the coverage it gets.

I'm not worried about the end of the world at all.

But I am worried, given all the seismic activity in the Pacific recently, that the next big earthquake could be here in southern California.

Maybe it is...maybe it isn't. My belief is that we cannot know, nor are we supposed to. Maybe these are the signs of end times, or maybe things will be even worse in end times. Whatever the case is, I'm not going to worry because I can't stop it.

Personally, I think that the whole process of "end times" is going to take a very long time in and of itself, and even if this is the beginning, we won't be alive to see it through.

I totally get what you mean, but weren't most of these one major event? In some ways that's different to me than hearing not-quite-so-major-but-still-pretty-horrifying events over and over and over again. One thing you can write off as a fluke. When it's happening everywhere, it just seems weirder to me. Not that I'm saying I think the world is about to end. But I do see this as possibly different.

100 years ago, nobody in LI would have a clue about a tsunami in Japan. Nor would you know about birds dying in another state. I seriously doubt that around the world, there weren't not-quite-so-major-but-still-pretty-horrifying events happening at the same time as the "big" events in the past. We have instant access to everything that happens everywhere, no matter how big or little it is.

The only difference between now and any other period in time is that we are AWARE of all the things that are happening. It's not that there actually ARE more things happening.

These things have been going on forever--natural disasters, large die offs of animals, etc... The only reason we hear about it so much now is due to social media and the availability of information. But realistically, this has all been occurring since the beginning of time.

As far as the massive die-offs, a quick google search will show that these bizarre phenomenons have occurred many times in the past due to a ton of factors (poisoning, climate change, shock). We just rarely heard about it because it usually happens in rural areas (who in the 80s, didn't have Flickr to post pictures of it on, youtube to post videos on, etc...)

Nothing's happening more frequently or more intense, there are just more avenues for us to find information now.

possible, but not necessarily true. do you have any evidence that this is the case? because at this point we should be able to make some correlations, no?

I agree. I do have anxiety about not knowing how things will play out, but this is just too broad and abstract for me to truly worry about. I have enough worries in my daily life, I can't imagine worrying about the end of days too. I hope it doesn't happen though Chat Icon

I also totally agree with this too! We're more aware of it because the avenues to provide information are more abundant.

I agree with those who said that in the past, we wouldn't even know about half of these events happening in other places because news did not travel that quickly, nor did it travel around the world the way it does today.

Also, let's always remember that earthquakes and tsunamis happen hand in hand -- one causes the other so it's not unusual that they happen at the same time and cause other ones to occur..

I will admit that the birds falling out of the sky is creepy though.

Just picking an arbitrary "bad time" in history....

The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1348 and 1350. The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30% – 60% of Europe's population

In Europe, the Medieval Warm Period ended sometime towards the end of the 13th century, bringing the "Little Ice Age" and harsher winters with reduced harvests.

In the years 1315 to 1317 a catastrophic famine, known as the Great Famine, struck much of North West Europe. It was arguably the worst in European history, perhaps reducing the population by more than 10%.

In 1337, on the eve of the first wave of the Black Death, England and France went to war in what would become known as the Hundred Years' War.

In 1318 a pestilence of unknown origin, sometimes identified as anthrax, targeted the animals of Europe, notably sheep and cattle, further reducing the food supply and income of the peasantry.

Any one of these things are worse than anything we've seen in recent history.... and they all happened within a single lifetime, and I haven't even looked for smaller events around the world yet.....

Whenever this question comes up, I am reminded of the following quote:

“Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia.”

So, no, I don't worry about it.
