A new CIO mommy...just have a quick question

OK so we did CIO with DS this week for naps and it worked really well. So well that he started having problems cosleeping at night.

So, here we are on our 1st night of CIO. Our ped said when DS was 5 months he should be good for at least 8 hours of sleep without getting hungry. DS has coslept with us so whenever he'd wake up I'd just nurse him back to sleep.

At what point in the night do I know he is hungry and is crying because he wants to eat? Or do I just assume since he is 7 months he should have no problem going 10 hours?

TIA!

ETA.....do I just let him cry himself back to sleep throughout the night?

we had that problem too. One sign was she'd fall back to sleep quickly after starting to eat. So I just had DH get her when she woke and sure enough she went back to sleep without eating.
Then we knew she was not hungry and eventually she stopped waking too.

ETA: try not to immidiately tend to him also, or he'll start to use that to his advantage.

I formula fed so i can't really give you good advice. But with ds, when he would only eat like 2 or 3 ounces when he woke... we realized it wasn't out of hunger.

Also some babies need the bottle or boob to fall asleep. Those that don't know how to self soothe often need the sucking reflex to put themselves back to sleep.

Will he take a pacifier?

Nope, binkies to him are a toy and he just plays around with them till he eventually "loses" it.

I guess he will just have to cry himself back to sleep? Chat Icon

It's not easy & we are letting DS cry also......not picking him up at least most times.

But he stopped eating during the night at like 10 weeks old & was mainly BF (i supplemented with about 8 ounces of formula a day at that point). He slept really well for about 7 weeks, then when he did wake at night we knew it was not hunger.

Since he started waking again, it's always because he needs soothing. For a long time we HAD to pick him up. Now at least a belly rub & binly help. But we are STILL working on it!

my ds is over 4 months now, and he gobbles down his 6 ounces twice sometimes three times a night, so I feel he is truly hungry. if he was only drinking one or 2 oz I would start to wonder if he was really hungry

ETS: my pediatrician said if we know he is not hungry we can let him cry, but I personally can't do that.Basically, if you are sure he is not hungry , she said it's best to let DC CIO Good Luck!

Jess.... I don't even know what to tell you... Kristina has been sleeping 12 hours a night w/o waking since she was 4 months old....

B/C of this, I would say that he prob isn't even hungry during the night - he's just looking for the consolation of mommy, KWIM?

how did it go?

'

7:25 fed him dinner (half stage 2 veggie).
7:45 bath
8:00 lotion, diaper, pj's
8:05ish turn on sound machine and aquarium in crib
8:06ish nurse to drowsy
8:15ish put Ryan in the crib
8:17-8:45 cried
8:47ish asleep
4:50 woke up

I wasn't sure what to do. He started with just a whine then he started to sound a bit upset. So I figured maybe he was hungry since when we were cosleeping he would wake up every 1.5ish and I would nurse back to sleep.

So, I went in. Took him out of the crib. Nursed him (in the dark) but he didn't seem to be falling asleep. So I took him into the bedroom and put on Clifford. But DH said he kept rubbing his eyes and he was still tired.

Back to his room I went. Turned the sound machine back on as well as the aquarium sat back in the rocker. Nursed. Didn't see him getting drowsy but I knew he was full. So I put him in his crib. He whined for like 10 minutes. Finally put his head down and about 15 minutes later he was up again. I figured that was his way of telling me he was done.

We were dressed and ready for the day at 6:30am. Definitely a little earlier than I'd prefer, but it's ok. I'll take it!
