Here is something you can use on clothing-stick on a belt loop, it the kids zippered pocket, something like that.

It's as small as a paper clip.

I've also seen a thing you can attached to a shoe lace-I think in One step ahead.

The problem with these is that they only work within a few hundred feet. If someone gets you kid in a car and takes off, all bets are off.

Here is one that you can set to a certain range. If the child takes off out of that range, it goes off.

I don't know that I would have thought of it or considered it before I spat out the single most important thing in the every loving world to me.

to keep my child safe, there is NOTHING I would not entertain. NOTHING I would not do. every fiber of my being is on alert for danger. for ways to keep him safe.

if people want to think that is overbearing or smothering or whatever...I could not care on iota less. like seriously. I don't give a ****.

I told my dh and MIL the other day that I would DANCE TO PRISON. dancing the happy dance over the grave of anyone who tried to harm my son. oh yes. I would be the dancing queen of rikers.

you do not touch what is beloved by me without consequence. no way.

so, if getting a GPS keeps my son safe, and me out of prison...well, that is a win win in my life.

like I said in my very civil post over there......I hardly think protecting my son from possible unfathomable harm is overbearing, but I can see why some people would be uncomfortable with it. I too wouldve scoffed at the notion of it, pre-child.

It is definitely the kind of thing you can only understand if you are a parent-I know that sounds snarky but I don't mean it to be.

Though it's interesting to think about what you would/would not do as a parent, I think every parent can give you lists of things they said they would NEVER do once they had kids and about 1/2 of that list is out the window.

So, while it's fun and interesting to think about how you will be as a parent, until you have a kid you just don't know.

Even now, with a near 3 year old and a 7 month old I still say "I will never XXX", but I bet if you talk to me in a couple years some of that goes out the window too.

Heck, I never thought I would change a shiitty diaper on a stranger's lawn-only trashy people do that. Look at me now And that's only where poop is concerned. Child safety ratchets everything up a few notches, and my list of "I would never" gets shorter and shorter.

I remember reading an article about this years ago ( Cabinet Magazine The Clean Room / Wrestling with the "Digital Angel" Issue 5 Evil Winter 2001/02 )

At the time I thought is was awful, an invasion of privacy and could very easily be used for the wrong reasons. I am still opposed to being this "connected" and always accessible; there is a loss of independence and even a loss of humanity. Today it is very difficult to live quietly and within out natural environment, even when we spent time up north in the mountains you are still connected. When I was a child, we went to camp and had no phone, no TV and limited hot water. Now my parents camp has cable and wireless internet. These technologies are nice but they change us a humans. When I visit my parents at camp now my Dad is generally watching the Yankees and my Mom is on the porch surfing the net. Technology has a habit of isolating us when we are sitting right next to each other and at the same time making us "feel" connected.

With this device, for me, it is so hard to not want to immediately implant one into my son just in case something were to happen, but I also hate the idea. I son't like the idea of them becoming common place, becoming a regular method of checking on our kids. I don't want to be able to turn on a screen and see Johnny is skipping school. Yes, skipping school is wrong BUT being able to monitor my child 24/7 is not how I want to keep him in line.

As humans I think we need time to not be watched and to not be connected, we need independence and the ability to make take a step without being tracked.

I am very on the fence about this device.

I avoid watching the news. I can't look at that little Kyron's picture one more time. I just can't.

We drive by Josh's future school all the time and Leo said the other day, it seems like such a big place for him. One day, I am going to have to let him go into this big school for 8 hours. Leaves me gasping for air!

Then to watch this story unfold. I can't. My hand on a bible, I would rather bury my child then to spend a single night with him missing out there in the world. Needing his meds, scared...I can't imagine.

this is how I assumed the hypothetical device would work as well. Only activated in an emergency.

If thats not the case and its just a tracking device for a childs every movement, then I agree with you.

In a heartbeat! I would definitely want something that I could use in the horrible case of an emergency if she went missing. I wouldn't want to track her 24/7, but in the case of an emergency...without a doubt!

I'm torn - It's one of those things, that as a parent, I like, in theory.

I posted a poll about this EXACT topic a long time ago on here...and I was AMAZED at how many people said they felt it was a violation of their child's privacy..I think it ended up being 52% were for it and 48% were against it.

My opinion? A 7 year old needs protection, NOT privacy. I would be 1st in line for this....
