Re: A topic we touched on and I am coming right out and asking--would you send your child to a day care that has a high percentage of kids on DSS (day care being paid through the welfare system)
IMO this should not matter when choosing a daycare.I could care less how much the other parents pay as long as my children a well cared for.

Just because the parents are supported by DSS, should not judge the character of their kids...
or the character of the parents for that matter
honestly, I am not sure of why this is even being discussed
WHO CARES what funding someone may or may not get
how does that affect your life in any way, am I missing something?
ITA.. i do not send my child to daycare, but we do have family health plus/child health plus insurance which we do not pay for... but i work and pay my own rent, bills, etc... the only reason i have this insurance is because my job does not offer insurance! i am getting tired of people assuming that anyone that gets help from the state is any different than anyone who does not. now to answer the OP's question- no, it would not matter if the daycare i liked was full of children who were DSS... if i trusted the employees there and my child enjoyed going there i would not care what anyone else paid or did not pay to go there.

For those who asked how I know the percentages----there were meetings at the Suffolk County Legislature in which various providers of services appeared to complain that they were not being paid timely for services that the county provides. This center had kids on DSS and the county was stalling in paying the voucher or tuition or whatever you want to call it. So I am also concerned that I am sending my kids to a center that is feeling a pinch because they are not getting paid on time for services rendered. There was talk of a bill to require the county to pay for the service within 30 days (of what, I do not recall). I do not know what happened with that. Anyway, there were some day care directors who spoke at that meeting. One of them was from a center I am now considering. She also gave the legislature an overview of the center and their services. She gave the percentages.
Kerie from my professional experience even though Suffolk DSS doesn't pay on time, the daycare centers aren't kicking kids out. IF there is child turnover it is the result of the family becoming homeless and leaving the area, NOT b/c the facility isn't being paid.

Just wanted to add that his room has been very consistent. All the same kids are there and all of these kids start there At infancy and stay until kindergarten. So far he has had the same teachers and has made little friends with all the babies. The center relies on a lot of fund raising which helps immensely. Parents regularly sign petitions for the center to be paid from the state, but it has never affected the quality or the kids.

I am the product of daycare paid for ny DSS, I went to a place called The Freedom Center where is was all DDS kids including me!!!!!), it taught me such a great lesson at such an early age, race, income, etc makes no difference. 30 years later I am still friends with some of those kids, it was a great experiennce.

Only bc you said the place checks out good and all services were good. To me this is far more important then others incomes. But its not like I would solely seek out a dss school for my dd. I do not think I am better then someone else bc of the money or lack of money in my pocket. I pay out ALOT of money per week to daycare. Money that IMO should be a crime for taking. It is almost next to impossible for a working mom to have 2+ kids and have to pay out 500+ a week. Knowing that is why I would never criticize how someone else affords their daycare.

I don't fault Kerie for asking the question at all.
In the past there have been many topics on people who take advantage of the welfare system without needing it - or not getting on their feet because the system takes care of them, having more children because they get additional welfare money. I'll be the first to admit if someone fulfilled the unfortunate sterotype, I may think differently.
In my experience with daycare, the people that are in my daycare don't fall under that cateogory. They truly need the help & are grateful for it.

Re: A topic we touched on and I am coming right out and asking--would you send your child to a day care that has a high percentage of kids on DSS (day care being paid through the welfare system)
Thanks everyone. I still believe that this was a discussion worth having. I am known to consider every aspect of a situation. Sometimes I do it to a fault and sometimes it serves me well to be this way. At first, I felt that some people judged me harshly just for asking. I do not think that by asking the question, I have indicated much at all about my views. Some of you know my views and know what I do for a living, and that does involve dealing very compassionately with people in need. To judge me for asking this question is not much different than judging someone for receiving assistance. I did get a lot of private answers by FM so I will say that this thread doesn't represent the entire variety of views. I will also say that not one person, here or in FMs, gave an opinion that they could not back up with a solid reason. Overall, I am glad that this did not get too heated and I am still glad I asked.

I represent people applying for SSD and SSI. I'm also a bankruptcy lawyer, but SSD and SSI are what I have been doing the longest.

I will admit I am being totally naive when it comes to this stuff.
It did not even cross my mind that my daycare would be "involved".
I don't think it makes a difference for me though. The teacher has been there for a long time (the infant teacher) and the kids have been there too as long as DS was there.
I am not sure about the older sections though.
I am glad you posted this.

It doesn't mater to me... Personally when I had my first DD I was only 20 by the time she was ready for daycare at 2 1/2 I didn't have the money to pay for all of it. I wasn't on DSS ?? But I did get support from the state to help me pay for it and I know there were some kids getting the same help as me and others that weren't. It didn't make a diff. And no one knew I was getting help from the state unless they asked me.
