Abby's Baby Naming (with pics)
Yesterday was Abby's baby naming. We went back to the temple where DH became a Bar Mitzvah. Coincidentally, the portion of the Torah that was read yesterday was the same portion that was read at DH's Bar Mitzvah over 25 years ago - actually, my brother did the same reading as well in 1975. So it was a very meaningful day. Abby slept through the very long service.
Abby was named Avigayil Yisraela Pessel for my father, DH's grandfather and my mother:
After DH and I had our honor at the Torah, the Rabbi took Abigail, walked her up and down the aisle of the synagogue and everyone sang and clapped for her.
I had tears in my eyes as I thought about this beautiful little girl and who she was named for. Her name, Avigayil/Abigail means "gift of the father" or "father's joy" which is only fitting. She was named for MY father and she would have been HIS joy. She is now DH's joy and love of our lives.
DH's grandfather was a wonderful man. I had heard many stories about him though I did not know him myself. It was very important that she receive his Hebrew name, "Yisrael".
As for her having a second middle Hebrew name, it is not all that common. But as many of you know, my mother passed away when I was about 5 months PG. She knew I was PG and that we were having a girl. She was so excited and would have fallen in love with Abby the way everyone else did. We felt it necessary for her to be named for given the circumstances. My siblings and I are still in mourning for her (The Jewish mourning period is one year). It was very hard to stand and say the mourner's prayer for my mother while holding the child who was named for her. At the same time, I felt blessed with such a beautiful baby and felt the presence of BOTH of my parents that day.
After services were over, family and friends headed over to HR Singletons for a luncheon buffet. The food was good and everyone seemed to have a really good time. It was very important for us to have all of our friends and family surrounding us so there were a lot of people. I was bummed out because whoever delivered the cake held it poorly and there was a crack right down the middle. They really could not repair it, so Singletons gave us a gift certificate for a dinner. They did the best they could as it was not their issue. The only thing I would change is that they added more people to serve food as the buffet line was very long and did not move very fast.
All in all, it was a wonderful day. I am grateful for everyone's generosity and thoughtfulness. I am even more grateful for my little girl. May she be blessed with a lifetime full of the same kind of love that she received yesterday as she entered the Jewish faith. Her Bat Mitzvah will be in 13 years. I am really looking forward to it.

It WAS a great day for our family. We needed an uplifting experience.
I would love to thank my incredible LIF family for being there to support us. It was high time that WE had a function that you could all be a part of!
Now I clearly expect you all to be able to recite EVERYTHING you heard in Hebrew the next time I see you. I actually had NO idea how Conservative that synagogue was. Good thing I knew the prayers or I would have been lost.

Leslie, it was a beautiful event and I was glad to share in your Simcha. I'm starting to love the word Simcha. I love Abigail's names, too. We do have pictures and I will get them to you.

Awww Leslie that is so beautiful about her name and the significance. I am so mad that I wasn't there but I have her bat mitzvah marked down on my calendar already No other invites will be taken on that day!!
